Junior Year Planning

College Research Process

  • Think about what you are looking for in a college or university

  • Research as many schools and programs as possible

  • Keep an open mind!

  • Visit colleges when possible

  • Attend college rep visits at MHS

  • Use Naviance Student to learn about different colleges and careers

  • Attend College Night at MHS, and/or other local college fairs

  • Meet with your counselor (February to May) to discuss your college plans

  • Meet with teachers to ask for college recommendations (May)

  • Complete the Senior Survey and Resume in Naviance Student

  • Attend the MHS College Essay Workshop (June)

Standardized Testing

  • Take the PSAT (October)

  • Review PSAT scores on College Board website (early December)

  • Determine which test you will take (ACT or SAT)

  • Create a testing timeline (time to prepare, dates to test)

  • Register for the ACT or SAT

Financial Aid

  • Research college costs using College Scorecard and Net Price Calculators

  • Fill out the FAFSA when it opens on October 1st (senior year)

  • Submit the CSS profile if applicable (senior year)

  • Research other Scholarship and funding opportunities

Summer To-Do List

  • Take part in summer employment, internship, volunteer work, educational or research programs

  • Continue to finalize your college list

  • Begin working on your applications (register for Common App)

  • Draft your personal essay

  • Supplements become available August 1
