January 2026
We are so happy to celebrate an incredibly positive 2025 year and begin the 2026 school year off on the right foot! Everything starts with simply showing up, these few tips can really lead to a successful new year.
Students must be attending school every day, with the exception of illness. If you’re sick, stay home and we will get you your work.
Attending school regularly greatly contributes to educational success while providing a sense of routine, purpose, and means of socialization.
Keep to a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine. Children should get 8-10 hours of sleep per night. Lay out clothes and pack up materials needed for school the night before to avoid the morning rush.
Get outside for fresh air and sunshine. Exercise and eat healthy!
Speak with the school counselor or psychologist if your child needs social-emotional support during the school day.
Attendance, lateness, and student sign-outs will be handled in the main office. Call 677-4210, x3101 to report an absence as soon as possible in the morning. An email communication to to our attendance office is an acceptable and legal form of communication: mms.attendance@millbrookcsd.org . Please call the main office in the case of an extended absence (two or more days) so that we are aware. To prevent your child from becoming overwhelmed by catching up on assignments, please be sure that work is done and submitted in a timely fashion so long as your child is well enough to complete it.
Dates to Note for the month of January:
5 - School Reopens
16- Early Release
19- Martin Luther King Day School closed
23- SOTQ Breakfast
26- Start of 3rd Quarter
30-31- Jr High All County Festival
Schools promote academic success in reading, writing, and math, but we also have a responsibility to help students feel a strong sense of belonging and develop the soft skills that will serve them well in the future. We build these skills through RULER, our social-emotional learning curriculum, and reinforce them by promoting and celebrating our Core Values. Together, these values give our diverse community a shared vision of what it means to learn and grow side by side. Each quarter, we’ll recognize students from each grade who demonstrate a Core Value, and we’ll proudly display their certificates in the school.

Every year we are proud to submit our entries to the Patriot Pen. Nearly 70,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000! This year we are so impressed with the efforts by all of our students, but particularly by four students whose essays were so exemplary that they were recognized. Student Government Retreat
MMS Student Government is hard at work! Our MMS Student Government led by Ms. Feicht and Mr. Whittaker held a student government retreat where they met with local politicians and community members that make a difference daily in Millbrook. Millbrook Mayor Peter Doro, Millbrook Central School District Board of Education President Perry Hartswick and New York State Assemblymember Didi Barrett spoke to our student government about the importance of their efforts and ways they truly can make a difference. The student government then participated in team building activities and created subcommittees for the various efforts that they will be making throughout the year. Thank You to all for their commitment to our learning community!
Moving Up Day
Although it is a little early here at MMS we are already making plans for MMS Moving Up Day which is Tuesday, June 23rd. In the next week Mrs. Winters will be emailing home a form for how you would like your child’s name to appear on their Moving Up Day certificate. Please fill it out and return it to her by the end of January.
Hour of Code
Students at Millbrook Middle School once again participated in the annual Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a worldwide movement that aims to introduce millions of students to computer science through one-hour coding activities. Through the Hour of Code, the goal is to demystify coding and show that anyone can learn the basics, inspiring future interest in computer science. 6th and 8th grade Science classes met in the MakerSpace with Mrs. Morton and guest speaker Dov Frankl, who spoke about his journey in the Computer Science field. Students were then led through some coding activities. 7th graders worked with Science teacher John Miller on a special Hour of Code activity in their Science classes.

Health Tip of the Month
Holiday Fun @ MMS
So much fun was had by our students in December. We had an fantastic winter spirit week that included Pijama, Adam Sandler, and Color Wars days that culminated in an incredible Pep Rally at the high school where we recognized all of our Winter Sports Athletes. That evening our middle schoolers came back to have a Winter Ball. Our students truly had a memorable evening and we cannot say enough about the impeccable behavior and school spirit that was displayed by all! A BIG thank you to our NJHS volunteers who helped througout the event. Happy Holidays!
