Our overarching Year 7 theme in SciTech is Energy, every pupil in Year 7 spends the first Half Term designing and making a rubber band racer. The project is designed around the new Curriculum for Wales.
Pupils carry out a Hooke's Law experiment, they find out about elasticity. They create graphs and predict how energy stores and transfer will affect their car.
Pupils watch a short film about a gravity racer and find useful information about mass, inertia and momentum that helps them to design their own racer.
Pupils use maths skills to discover how the diameter and circumference of wheels will affect their racer. They can use CAD and a 3D printer to make wheels.
We use MicroBit or the Arduino Science Journal app to explore accelleration, deceleration, inertia and momentum with MAT students. J2e is also used to compare results.
