Welcome to PembsSTEM hub, Milford Haven Cluster of Schools' STEM resource.
In a world where technology permeates almost every aspect of our lives STEM education is vital to ensure our students can capitalise on opportunities and respond to diverse challenges both now and throughout their lives.
In relation to the NCfW and it's Four Purposes and the need to support learners in becoming ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives and also enterprising, creative contributers who can play a full part in life and work it is clear to see that STEM subjects will form the cornerstone and hopefully enable students to be future problem solvers who play an active role in resolving complex issues such as Climate Change.
Another key concept in the NCfW is the ability to adapt the curriculum to suit local opportunites such as the Pembroke Dock Marine City Deal development. There will be many opportunities for students who develop STEM skills in South Pembrokeshire. With a group of other teachers across Key Stages I have worked to create interventions for a bespoke STEM/CfWRE/Sustainability curriculum strand. The aim is to rollout interventions for each progression step which will stimulate exciting STEM work from 4-16.
I talk to students about the 4th Industrial Revolution and use the example of someone with the surname Potter whose life has been spent honing their skills of making and firing crockery. In 1759 their world was turned on it's head when Josiah Wedgewood introduced a system of slip moulding that meant many more pots could be made without the need for skilled craftspeople. The parallel to this in the 21st Century is Ai systems that will revolutionise many parts of our lives and the way we work. It is hard to imagine where Ai systems such as ChatGPT will take us over the next few decades but it is certain that we need to prepare our students
STEM education has the potential to prepare our students for a future world where there is a danger of being passive consumers of tech and being disconnected from the advancements or
This site has been developed as part of my vision for STEM learning in the Milford Haven Cluster of schools, I am Meirion Owen, STEM lead in Milford Haven School. I have been teaching Design Technology, Engineering and Construction in Pembroksehire for almost 30 years. I am quite evangelical about DT, it offers scope to contextualise cross curricular theory as well as stimulating creative problem solving, building empathy and improving communication skills. STEM naturally encompasses all the great aspects above and makes implicit links with Maths which I see as the 'glue' joining the other strands.
This is really phase 1 of the STEM plan, I hope this site will become a gateway for staff and students and I have plans to build a library of exemplar resources that will be able to be accessed via the site.
