“Let’s Talk About New Year’s Day”
Elsa:
Good morning Everyone. My name is Elsa and I’m so happy you’re here today!
Hi, friends! Happy New Year! Today, we will talk about January 1st, the first day of the year in the Gregorian calendar.
Ernie:
Great job! Today, we’re going to learn about how people celebrate New Year’s Day every January 1st.
Jerry:
One way to celebrate New Year is by watching fireworks! Have you ever seen fireworks? They go BOOM!
Ben:
Another way to celebrate is by using noisemakers. We make noise to say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new year!
Jimmy:
In some countries, people prepare fruits for New Year’s Day. They believe round fruits bring good luck because they look like coins! Coins mean money. Can you count the fruits with me? One, two, three…
Ernie:
In some places, like Taiwan and China, people give red envelopes called hongbao. Inside, there is money. It’s a way to wish someone good luck and happiness.
Jerry:
Before New Year’s Day, many families clean their homes. They sweep away the bad luck and make space for good luck to come in.
Elsa:
Now, let’s talk about how to have a good year in 2025. First, we can be kind. Being kind means helping others and saying nice things.
Jimmy:
Next, we can try our best. If something is hard, don’t give up. Keep trying, and you’ll get better.
Ernie:
Another way to have a good year is to be healthy. Eat fruits and vegetables, drink water, and get lots of sleep.
Ben:
Let’s practice together!
What do people watch on New Year’s Day?
That’s right! Fireworks!
Jimmy:
What do people prepare for good luck?
Yes! Round fruits for good luck!
Jerry:
What do people give in red envelopes?

Good morning Everyone. My name is Amber and I’m so happy you’re here today!
Today, we will talk about Chinese New Year. This is the most important holiday in Taiwan. It’s also called the Lunar New Year. This year, it’s the Year of the Snake. People believe the snake is wise and brings good luck.

Dumplings look like gold, so they bring wealth. Fish means you’ll have extra luck, and rice cakes mean you’ll rise to a higher level in life.

Jieying:
On New Year’s Day, we visit a temple to pray for a happy and healthy year. We also wear new clothes, usually red, because red is a lucky color.
Jaron:
Another fun thing we did was watch a lion dance. The lion dance scares away bad spirits and brings good future.
Mike:
We also prepared 12 round fruits, like oranges and apples. Round fruits bring happiness.
Amber:
In Taiwan, we celebrate for many days. We visit relatives, eat delicious food, and enjoy time with family and friends.
