Who should take the placement exam:
There is no placement exam in Economics. However, placement codes can be entered to assist students who meet prerequisites with test scores (IB Higher Level, A-Levels) or transfer credits that are not recognized by Banner programming during online registration. A placement code for Higher Level (HL) IB is entered by the Registrar’s Office after students submit their IB HL certificates to the Registrar's. Students must also submit their A-Level certificates to the Registrar's Office with the appropriate grades to receive a placement code. AP test scores are also entered by the Registrar’s Office after they receive the student's scores directly from College Board. To request placement codes for Transfer Credits that meet ECON 0150 and ECON 0155 prerequisites, please visit the Economics Department Placement Information page and complete the Economics Placement Code Request Form so the appropriate “placement” code can be added to your record for the purpose of registering for ECON courses. For more detailed information on IB, A-Levels, and Transfer of Credit, please refer to the economics department’s Requirements page or set up a time to meet with the department coordinator Amy Holbrook.
It is important to note that many economics courses require calculus one as a prerequisite. High school calculus DOES NOT meet the calculus one requirement for Economic courses. If you took AP exams and earned a score of 4 on APAB or a score of 3 on APBC you should request your score be transferred to Middlebury to become a part of your permanent test score record prior to when your course preferences are due. If you took calculus in high school visit the Math Department's Placement page and complete the math survey for placement.
