The College Community Chorus is excited for a new commissioned work, Salve Regina by Ukrainian composer Dmytro Malyi (I. Kotlyarevsky University of Arts, Kharkiv). Dmytro Malyi wrote the piece early this summer after we exchanged a few emails about the idea of a commission, to create art out of the disaster that is the continuing war inflicted on Ukraine by Russian president Vladimir Putin. Dmytro Malyi and I spent the summer of 2022 revisiting and discussing the score, and it has been exciting to witness the piece develop and expand since that time.
Salve Regina is about Ukraine's needs today, it is a response for Ukraine today. Dmytro Malyi now teaches at the university in Kharkiv, , where Dmytro is still living. The university is not presently operating in person due to persistent Russian bombing of the city. We are privileged to carry the journey of this new piece forward this fall.
Dmytro Malyi was born in 1987 in Kherson. In 2007, he finished the Kherson Music School as a pianist, and in 2012 he completed his studies at the Kharkiv Kotlyarevskyi National University of Arts as a composer (under Professor Victor Muzhchyl) and a pianist (under Professor Volodymyr Ptushkin). In 2018 he defended his dissertation on "The specifics of compositional thinking in the music of the last third of the XX - early XXI centuries" (under Doctor of Arts Lyudmyla Shapovalova). After graduating from the university, he worked in China for five years, teaching piano, composition, and music theory. Since 2020 he has been working at the departments of composition and music theory of the Kharkiv Kotlyarevskyi National University of Arts. Dmytro Malyi has won many awards: at the international competition ITF (Mansi, USA, 2019), Shid-opera (Kharkiv, 2020), Spheres of a Genius - A Tribute to Leonard Bernstein (Vienna, 2021).
Malyi's works are performed in Ukraine (in Kharkiv, Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and other cities), as well as in the USA and China. The composer has written over 30 works, including symphonic pieces Angelic Acts, Concerto for Orchestra, Overture Land of the Ancestors, instrumental Big for piano and orchestra, Concertino for guitar and orchestra, chamber pieces Fools for trombone and piano, Choral Variations for chamber ensemble, Sound Engravings for flute, clarinet and piano, Vocalises for violin and piano, Engravings for piano, Three Dead Kings for violin, vocal and instrumental music: Christmas Mass for soloists, children's choir and chamber ensemble, Ave Regina Caelorum for choir accompanied by piano, My Land for soloists, children's choir, bagpipes and piano, Lullaby for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble, opera Green Circle (libretto by Yulita Ran).
Dmytro Malyi is a musician of a continuous creative search who goes beyond common thinking. Currently, he works with non-traditional notation and extended techniques of playing instruments. For the composer, the main principle in creating music is the motivated selection of methods and techniques and the idea itself that shapes the musical material.

1.
Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope, hail.
2.
To you we cry, banished children of Eve;
to you we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
3.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us.
4.
And Jesus, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, after this, our exile.
5.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
6.
Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope, hail.
To you we cry, banished children of Eve;
to you we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
