Using AI in Education Podcast
By Michael Barcellos & Marta Sanchez Gallardo
Working on a podcast was a new, fun, and exciting experience for our team. When it comes to the skills acquired by working on this assignment; the initial step was topic selection followed by developing an outline and talking points. Working through our talking points it was important for us to engage our listeners and still address the importance of artificial intelligence and its influence on education. Our focus was centered on the idea that we did not want to be one-sided. Our goal was to have a podcast episode that was engaging, informative, and flexible. We wanted the proponents of using artificial intelligence in education to hear our episode and have a YEAH!! reaction. At the same time, we wanted opponents of the use of artificial intelligence to feel understood and heard when listening to our podcast.
When it came down to recording techniques and audio editing, we relied on the strengths of each teammate. This was also a learning opportunity, and this is where it became fun. We chose a convenient software which was Zoom. We relied on Michael's technical abilities with Zoom to extract the audio file from the recording which we decided to use for our podcast. We selected the music for the intro and outro and decided what “vibe” we were going for with the podcast.
The roles, tasks, and responsibilities were easy to divide. As mentioned above we choose to work from a place of strengths. Dividing tasks and responsibilities was not a difficult endeavor. Our team worked so smooth through dividing the tasks that it was very straight forward to identify what we were doing. Selecting a date and time to record went smooth. Even the recording process was a smooth non-rehearsed conversation. As agreed, a podcast should be spontaneous and easy flowing. We are proud to say that we have achieved this goal. Listening to our podcast you can hear the natural and spontaneity. If we had to do this all over again, we would not do anything differently. Perhaps getting a logo for the M &M show? Less silent moment. We noticed a bit of newbie nerves. But overall, we felt that the flow of the podcast was smooth.
When it comes down to theories and models that influenced the development of this podcast. We also did not want to flood our listeners with too much information at once. Constructivism emphasizes the value of experiential learning and the building of knowledge through experiences (Reiser & Dempsey, 2007). For the development of our podcast built on constructivist foundation because of the relevant experiences we as hosts contribute (Reiser & Dempsey, 2007). According to the cognitive load theory, the capacity of the human brain to handle information is limited (Reiser & Dempsey, 2007). While developing our outline and goal for our podcast we found it critical to present information in a way that is simple to comprehend and digest. We also did not want to flood our listeners with too much information at once. In conclusion, working on this project was a highly informative and fun learning experience. This was also to practice the theories and models we have been learning about and working with.
