Painting with stencils is an expressive art practice used in street art for its quickness, graphic aesthetic, and adaptability. With stencils, street artists can create copies of a design many times in many locations. Due to spray paint's toxicity and cost, youth can use stencils and water soluble paint to practice similar street art processes and create duplicates of their unique stencils designs indoors on paper. Below are some developmental considerations for working with students of each age group and ways that they benefit developmentally from exploring this process:
3 - 12th: Youth will understand how to develop a new craft reflecting community art practices, envisioning, persisting with, and reflecting on the challenges and strategies often necessary in making a stencil and creating expressive and intentional marks onto a surface. (Studio Habits of Mind).
Key Disposition for students of each age group:
3-5: Patience. Development of motor skills. Identifying community values. Meaning making.
6-12: Patience. Understanding Community vs Self-identity. Persistence. Reflection.
British Street artist
"A contemporary British street artist and activist who, despite his international fame, has maintained an anonymous identity. Aimed as a form of cultural criticism, the artist often targets established social and political agendas with his witty illustrations produced with stencils and spray paint."

Learners would potentially discover the freedom and immediate satisfaction of creating multiples of the same design and exploring the many possibilities available in stencil making –– creating content that is not only meaningful to them but for others as well.
Learners will experiment with lines, shapes, and patterns made in their stencil to practice ways to express an intentional and specific message (concept) and aesthetic effect. Experiences gathered could encourage them to explore and participate in street art culture, regularly practicing designs and mark making to better understand options available in the craft.
