Throughout working with Dr. Kennedy we have developed strong problem solving skills as it relates to our staining techniques. Testing various temperatures, probe concentrations, and buffers has lead us to think more efficiently about the effects of our actions within research. We have learned to think critically when it comes to image processing because results are never straight forward and should not be taken at face value.
The nature of a histology based group relies heavily on teamwork. Throughout the academic year we have learned how to work effectively on scheduling staining procedures as they often last several hours. Overall, effective communication among us has been an important factor in being able to execute our procedures properly.
This project used a variety of technological applications when it came to data collection. For instance, software for the confocal and bright field microscope needed to be learned in depth in order to collect good quality images. Our use of technology on this project has given us a better understanding of how important these pieces of equipment can be to data collection and how they all take time to master.
