NOD (Non-Obese Diabetic) and NOR (Non-Obese Diabetes Resistant) Mouse Model
This project makes use of several stains and microscopic instruments in order to visualize the structure of the mice's pancreas and intestines and the bacterial populations within them.
Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization (FISH): Used to visualize bacteria by tagging them with fluorescent DNA probes
Islet Immunostaining: Used to visualize glucagon, insulin, and insulitis in islet cells
Alcian Blue-Periodic Shiff stain (AB/PAS): Used to visualize the goblet cells and intestinal mucus layer
Lectin (Mucus) Fluorescent stain: Used to visualize the intestinal mucus layer(s) and goblet cells
Zeiss 710 confocal microscopy: Used to visualize Mucus, Islet’s, and FISH
Olympus AX-70 microscopy: Used to visualize AB/PAS and quantify the mucus layer
