Recess for Champions: Connection to Professional Development
Communication
The involvement of SPARC in creating Recess for Champions significantly strengthened communication skills in various different settings. From developing the initial program curriculum, connecting with student-athlete volunteers and interacting with young elementary school students, communication was tailored to best fit each of these audiences. By discussing logistics and sharing updates with various faculty members, we were able to express new ideas effectively and ensure that all members of the team felt comfortable at each step of the program development process.
Professionalism
Research initiatives through SPARC have helped to develop a sense of professionalism both academically and socially. As we planned and executed the Recess for Champions program, we were mindful of representing our research lab with respect, reliability, and openness to each individual that made the program possible. We furthered our sense of importance in being punctual, prepared, and flexible while dealing with the various changes that arise from working with local communities and school staff. This recess initiative has emphasized the importance of holistic decision-making and accountability in creating positive youth programming.
Teamwork
Collaboration with others and working on a team was essential in making Recess for Champions possible. We were able to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and community members that allowed us to contribute to a shared vision valuing each person’s strengths and perspectives. SPARC worked together to adapt games by grade level, oragnize recess logistics, and troubleshoot problems as they arose. The collective effort of Recess for Champions reinforced the importance of working together while aiming to deliver impactful and inclusive programming for local youth.
