Migration Heritage Foundation offers Heritage Literacy Stipends of up to $500 to support minors enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, summer or other educational-related programs. Applicants must submit the application by June 1 for summer programs or August 1 for after school or other programs. Stipends are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds are available.
Parent/Guardian Stipends:
Stipend applicants must be parents or guardians who are U.S residents and age 18 or above who submit an application on behalf of a minor in their charge. The following documents should be submitted with the stipend application:
1. Verification of needy status with ONLY ONE of the following items:
a. A copy of notice verifying eligibility for reduced-rate meals, food stamps or summer feeding program;
or
b. A copy of the parent/guardian’s income tax return for the previous year to verify that the household income below the poverty level. (Visit http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/15poverty.cfm for more information about the poverty level). Note: If an income tax return is provided, please remove all identifying information such as date of birth and first five digits of the social security number.
2. A Heritage Essay written by minors age 7 and above. The essay should be titled ”My (your nationality) My American Dream.” For example, if the applicant’s nationality is Chinese, the essay should be titled ”My Chinese Heritage, My American Dream." Minors Aged 7 and under should submit a Heritage Worksheet (see example below) and email it to Dr. Sylvia Gist at srgf2013@gmail.com
3. Proof of application for, admission to, or attendance in a summer or after-school program anywhere in the U.S. This proof may include a receipt for the enrollment fee or other payment verification.
*Important Note: If awarded the stipend, the parent/guardian to whom the check is made payable will be asked to submit a recent photo of the minor along with the parent or guardian's photo. Submission of the photo will serve as parental permission for Migration Heritage Foundation to publicize and use the child's and parent/guardian's photo for fundraising purposes.
