Documenting the Past, Shaping the Future
OUR MISSION:
What we do, and how we do it
MHF documents the past by displaying Items and support activities that promote and illuminate the cultural, social, historical, and economic experiences of African Americans. The historical markers we facilitate, along with the books, narratives, vignettes, artwork, family histories, photos, historic sites, and relics, shed light on historical and current-day experiences in Holmes County, one of many regions in the Deep South that experienced the mass migration of African Americans.
We periodically partner with churches, local groups, and state agencies to help preserve the heritage of cities, towns, and counties in Mississippi and throughout the nation. Our most recent heritage partnership projects are:We shape the future through our Education Support Program, providing financial assistance in the form of scholarships and stipends to young people for more than a decade. The support we generate and distribute helps these young people, who will help shape our future, to pursue their career goals. The heritage essays they wrote discuss how their family members, ancestors, kindreds, and others influenced and shaped them for the future.
