My African American Heritage, My American Dream
by Aaron Davis
I am a senior at Holmes County Central High School in Lexington, Mississippi. I was raised on Wash Bailey Road in Holmes County along with my sister and cousin. My family is very close-knit, and they emphasize the importance of family values and education. Among my family’s values are praising God, celebrating holidays, spending time together, showing respect for elders, and taking pride in one’s culture.
I am a member of Poplar Spring Methodist Church, where my mother and grandmother have always taken us. I remember my grandmother teaching me about the significance of believing in God and how my great-grandmother assisted in the construction of our former church. In my family, holidays are important. We get together for birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or any other occasion that unites the family. Family unity and mutual support are of the highest importance. In addition to showing respect for the elderly, helping others is crucial in my community, and asking the elderly for advice is always encouraged and beneficial.
I remember hearing stories of my great-grandmother going to marches in Jackson and boycotting stores in Lexington. I have books, a milk churn, a quilt created by my great-grandmother, and additional items that symbolize my heritage and culture. I will always honor my great-grandmother, as well as activists, community leaders, and other African Americans who have contributed to my heritage,
My American dream is to graduate from high school on May 23, 2025. I plan to enroll at Jackson State University this fall and major in civil engineering. I have always dreamed of being a civil engineer to help with infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and waste disposal, in my county. I believe that by working with local leaders and communities, I can make a meaningful difference, as I am aware of their specific needs and desires. I also plan to get married and start a family. However, I will never forget my African American upbringing, values, and principles.
