Thomas Jefferson was the first secretary of the United States appointed by George Washington. He has greatly influenced how we run our government today and had many positives and negatives during his presidency. In this document we will share who he was, his early life and what the benefits are to the life we are living today. and we also have a slideshow showing what he did during his presidency and what he did before his election.
Who was he?
He was a founding father of the states who was elected to write a section of the Declaration of independence. During his presidency he was responsible for doubling the size of the united states by successfully brokering the Louisiana purchase. He also founded the University of Virginia. Well educated and preposterous, Thomas was a lawyer and politician who came to believe the British parliament held no control over the 13 Colonies.
Early life
Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at the Shadwell plantation located just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. he was born into one of the most prominent families of Virginia's planter elite and was the 3rd born of 10 siblings. As a boy, Jefferson's favorite things to do were playing in the woods, practicing the violin and reading, and soon began his formal education when he was only 9 years old.
The Declaration of Independence.
The document that Jefferson drafted opened with the preamble stating the natural rights of all human beings and then continued to enumerate specific grievances against King George III that absolved the American colonies of any allegiance to the British crown. Over the next 17 days Jefferson drafted one of the most beautiful and powerful testaments to liberty and equality in world history.
