Screenplay

You will be writing your own screenplay throughout the semester. Start to think of ideas!

  • Not every idea will make a good movie.
  • It must be visual and have action.
  • Movies follow a formula: setting up a crisis, complicating it, then resolving it.
    • This should be done in thirds:
      • by the end of the first third of the movie the main characters are introduced and the catalyst sets the story in motion
      • by the second third the problem is bigger and stickier
      • by the end they face obstacles and either succeed or fail.
  • Start to think about your idea. You will need a general screenplay idea for a 6 minute movie.
  • If you don’t keep a daily journal in your life, you should start one. If you record everything that happens in your life (good, bad and boring) you should have plenty of ideas for short films.
