Episode 6: Why we need safe spaces for people of color at predominantly white schools

In this episode, four affinity group/club leaders from Moorestown Friends School (MFS) discuss the importance of race-specific safe spaces for Students of Color who attend predominantly white institutions (PWIs). We also discuss ways in which our school can support us on our journey of leadership.

affinity group controversy

A few moments prior to our recording, we were made aware of a circulating article (linked below) that attacks our school for having "racially segregated affinity groups". As affinity group leaders/members, we all felt extremely offended in the moment because we felt that the article failed to properly portray what our affinity groups truly are. We indirectly comment on the article in the episode, highlighting the benefits of affinity groups in our school community. We all want to further emphasize the necessity of having affinity groups/safe spaces in all aspects of life, regardless of the false claims made about such groups in the article.
