Let's Talk: Creating Change Through Our Outrage

A Capstone Project by Eva Vanterpool

Background - Why This Project?

As a young Black girl who is very passionate and vocal about social justice work, I am constantly reminded about the "Angry Black Woman" stereotype that has plagued the Black community for generations. I am constantly told that I shouldn't appear as too upset or angry, and have even found myself passing this on to other passionate Black girls. However, I believe there is so much in our world that deserves outrage! I think it is okay and completely reasonable for us to be unapologetically upset and enraged about the injustices that we constantly have to battle. The most important thing is how we use that rage, and I believe it should be used to fuel a passion for change. This belief became the foundation of Capstone project, hence the name!

Purpose

The purpose and ultimate goal of this project is to give my listeners the tools to combat all of the injustices that plague society by giving them the resources to create change from the people who are directly affected by systemic oppression. I want everyone to be able to speak their truth and allow others to learn from that.

Final Product

The culmination of this Capstone project will be a compilation of educational conversations and testimonies about the experiences of people within marginalized and underprivileged communities through a mixture of a podcast and a report made from survey responses. The podcast, also entitled "Let's Talk: Creating Change Through Our Outrage," will feature guests from outside of the MFS school community, and students who discuss various diversity-based topics. The survey, entitled "Tell Your Truth," will feature my peers' responses about diversity-based matters that are relevant to the school community. All of the episodes to the podcast can be found here on this website!
