The creative process is what we are focusing on. The creative process not only helps build creativity. It also helps to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
It is vital not to rush young artists to the next developmental level. Each stage is important and there is no advantage gained by rushing through one stage to reach another.
When speaking with a young artist, it is always best practice to focus questions on the "how" rather than the final identification.
Sample Conversation starters include:
"Can you tell me how you made that?"
"Can you tell me the materials you used to make this?"
"What problem-solving did you have to do when making this?"
"Did you have a plan on how to make this or did you create as you made it?"
"Was there anything challenging about making this?"
"What are you most proud of with this piece?"
Second-grade artists further explored oil pastels and ways to mix them with other materials. Artists made their own scratch art by first creating an oil pastel base layer and then painting over that layer with black paint. Once the black paint was dry they scratched their design into the paint revealing the oil pastel underneath! We also explored thinking about presentation! We taped our border to later reveal a nice white "frame" around our art!
Second-grade artists discovered that scientists are similar to artists! We both experiment, run tests, hypothesize, wonder, think, and so much more! A new medium: oil pastels were introduced and artists did some test samples on different techniques to use with this new medium. Artists then broadened their learning with their own self-led experiments and explorations! I love all the creative ways these artists used this new material!

Second-grade artists participated in an art challenge sponsored by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope #UnfoldTheUniverse Art Challenge. The challenge was to create what you think the telescope will find once it is in space. Students got to explore chalk pastels. We experimented with some different techniques and then topped off our galaxies with stars using a toothbrush and paint! We had so much fun completing this challenge and are excited to see if our display will be chosen to be included on NASA's James Webb Space telescope website.

Second-grade artists are getting into the spirit of being thankful! We questioned, thought & wondered around what a "Gallery" is and what may be displayed in a gallery. It was so fun to hear the "wonders" and connections the students made during our discussion. We also explored how we can show gratitude! These Second-graders have such big hearts! Each artist explored their gratitude within a picture frame and shared it with their peers. It is a pretty exciting day in the art room when we use "GIANT!" paper and get to draw on the floor! This is a great way to expand our knowledge of what, where, and how art is made and displayed!
2nd-grade artists participated in a lego build day! They had the opportunity to work together or independently. They also had the opportunity to work towards challenges that were displayed on the screen. This is such a fun way for young artists to visually see how each of us interprets concepts differently. Each artist approached the challenges in different ways and everyone had a great time sharing their creations!

Our rotating Friday schedule offers extended opportunities for exploration. 2nd-grade artists worked on self-directed projects. They were given a list of the materials they could explore with and had so much fun seeing what they could create, build, play, and experiment with! Open-ended projects are so vital to the development of problem-solving skills, building ideating skills, and allowing opportunities for spontaneous collaboration. Not to mention giving safe spaces to be in the learning pit and discovering how to get out!

2B Exploring!
2nd-grade artists were introduced to two contemporary artists who use stamps in different ways to create art. Stephen Fowler, & Federico Pietrella both create art using stamps. Both artists, however, use stamps in completely different ways. Artists explored the foundational properties of stamps and are designing and making their own stamps to create a self-directed final artwork. This will be a multi-level exploration that will grow as the artists gain knowledge.

2nd grade artists were introduced to two contemporary artists who use different mediums to create woven works of art. Julie VonDerVellen, & Diedrick Brackens both create art using various weaving techniques. Artists explored examples of their work, paying attention to the use of color and pattern. Artists were then introduced to basic weaving patterns to further explore using paper.
