Colleges create handbooks in order to protect the wellbeing of their students as well as maintain university policies and values. Especially in the case of Christian universities, handbook rules direct behavior in ways supportive of religious teachings. This study analyzes the language of four different Christian university handbooks, applying the work of Bakhtin & Holquist (1981), and reveals ways Christian universities negotiate the complexity of both serving diverse student populations and maintaining their Christian mission.
