STEP 2: Meet with a director to select an instrument. Please come to the Beginner Band Sign-Up Night on Thursday, February 26th at 6:00 PM in the Poteet Auditorium. This is where you meet with the band directors to learn about 6th grade band and select an instrument!
*If you are unable to attend, please e-mail Ms. Roberts to schedule a time to come to Kimbrough.
NO! Reliable local music companies can aid you in obtaining an instrument on a rental plan. The instrument approved for your child may be rented before an actual purchase is necessary. At the end of the rental period the rental fee may be applied toward the purchase of the instrument or toward the purchase of an advanced instrument.
The cost of renting a new or almost new instrument ranges from $25 - $60 a month. This allows the student to obtain a fine quality instrument to use with a minimum investment.
Some are, yes. If you wish to purchase or otherwise obtain a used instrument for your child, please let us evaluate it before you invest. An inferior instrument will only handicap your child, and it could possibly cost you more in unseen repairs than the instrument is worth. Remember, your child’s future success and the band’s success are dependent on a good quality approved instrument. It is also very important to obtain the specified mouthpiece and accessories.
The student and parent provide most instruments. The school district does own a few of the more expensive instruments such as oboes, bassoons, bass clarinets, euphoniums, and tubas. Students will be issued their instrument at the beginning of the school year.
NO! Most students who start band have had little or no musical training. We were beginners at one time and we understand the student’s needs. We start from the beginning in all phases. Those students with former musical training will find it an aid to their advancement.
Will band detract from my child’s school work?
NO! Band is a course taken during the school day. We do not rehearse with the beginner band on a regular basis after school. We will have a few rehearsals when a performance is near. We realize the number of activities and organizations that are competing for your family’s time and we do not demand frequent practices outside the school hours.
We do, however, expect the students to practice 30 minutes a day to ensure their individual success on the instrument. After all, you are investing in your child’s instrument and should expect some effort from your child to uphold “their end of the bargain.”
YES! Many of our best band students are involved in athletics and cheerleading. We also have many students who participate in choir, orchestra and theater while being enrolled in band.
Email any of the Kimbrough directors and will get in contact with you as soon as we are able!
