R.S. Kimbrough Middle School opened in 1993 and is named after Robert Snead Kimbrough, who was known at the turn of the century as Mesquite's "Town Father.” It is interesting to note Mr. Kimbrough played the clarinet in Mesquite’s first community band in 1902. Kimbrough Middle School has an approximate enrollment of 1200 students, made up of 6th through 8th grade students, with roughly 350 students enrolled in band.
Characteristic tone production and music literacy are the major areas of emphasis in the beginning band program. Beginning band students perform in two concerts, at the Mesquite ISD Solo & Ensemble Festival, and in two band festivals. Students who successfully complete their first year are enrolled in one of three ability based concert bands. The students' individual development continues through participation in the Mesquite ISD All-City Band, the TMEA Region III All-Region Bands, and the Mesquite ISD Solo & Ensemble Festivals.
The Kimbrough Advanced Band has received 19 consecutive UIL Sweepstakes awards in Class CCC. In 2016, the Kimbrough Band received the Texas Bandmaster’s Association Exemplary Middle School Band Award in 2016.
One of the greatest accomplishments of the Kimbrough band program is the outstanding success our students achieve in the Poteet High School Band. The Poteet Band is a consistent participant at the UIL State Marching Contest, and is a three-time State Champion. The Poteet Honors Band is the 2008 TMEA Class 4A Honor Band and is a recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Flag. The Poteet Band program was named the Texas Bandmaster’s Association Exemplary High School Band Program in 2009. When Kimbrough was selected in 2016, it was the first time in the award's history both a high school and a middle school feeder have both been recipients of this award.
