So, you want to use mindfulness in your classroom! But where to start, and what will work?
This resource, based on over 20 years of studies and experience, will provide you with all the basics you need to successfully implement mindfulness practices that have proven successful for our school community.
There are two prongs for preparing to bring mindfulness into a classroom effectively:
1. Personal mindfulness practices and training
2. Personal work on equity and anti-racism.
With the increasing popularity of "mindfulness," it is crucial that those choosing to teach it in their classrooms have personal training and practices in both equity and mindfulness. There runs the danger of silencing voices rather than supporting them without sufficient background. It is important to keep an equity lens when presenting and teaching mindfulness so that students are taught to respond effectively, not ignore when injustices are acceptable.
Mindfulness programs focus on empowering students by providing them with skills and tools that lead to improved self-awareness, impulse control, confidence, and resilience.
Every student has the innate ability to be a successful member of the school and the community. By providing “at-risk” students with skills that lead to positive results and successful school experiences, the whole school will see an improved climate.
Mindfulness practices also have an impact on taking restorative and empathetic approaches with our students on a daily basis in our classroom, as well as managing our own stress levels.
