Writing:
Our students did a wonderful job publishing their opinion essays. Their work is hanging in the hallway and we plan to have a mini celebration next week. Students will travel from desk to desk, reading essays, and writing classmates compliments on their writing.
We also just started unit 2 on informational writing. Our students launched by writing a baseline sample on how to plant a garden. Now we are using student exemplars to break apart each essay for their parts. We use TIDE to each Informational Writing.
T - Topic Sentence, I - Important Idea, D - Detailed Explanation, E - Ending.

Essential Question: How have Indigenous peoples lived in the Northeast, past and present?
The first unit is broken down into 3 clusters, each with their own focus.
Cluster 1: How can maps provide clues about land and people in the Northeast?
Cluster 2: What is the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the land?
Cluster 3: Where can we see Indigenous culture today, and how do Indigenous peoples keep their culture alive? (We are here now)
SEL (Social-Emotional Learning):
Each month we will have a trait of the month. We engage in SEL lessons during morning meeting, through class discussions, read alouds, and activities. This month our focus is on gratitude and being thankful for what you have.
Monthly Traits:
September: Friendship
October: Empathy
November: Gratitude
December: Kindness
*This month students created their own kindness holiday light. Students were asked to write about 2 ways they will show kindness during this holiday season.
SEL Curriculum Update:
Starting this week, our classroom began using the Everyday Speech Social Emotional Learning (SEL) resources to enhance our morning meetings. This resource is designed to explicitly teach students important social-emotional skills, starting with our first unit on Self-Awareness. We will integrate these lessons twice a week. This will allow all grades to develop a shared language and understanding as we work on the same SEL competencies at the same time.
Unit Outline:
Unit 1: Self-Awareness (November)
Unit 2: Self-Management (December)
Unit 3: Social Awareness (January)
Unit 4: Relationship Skills (February)
Unit 5: Responsible Decision-Making (March)
