Social and Emotional Climate

What is Social Emotional Learning?

The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), defines social-emotional learning (SEL) as: “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.”   Effective SEL programs begin at an early age and continue through high school. They work to develop five core SEL competencies, as defined by CASEL.

Please watch the video below to learn more about the 5 core SEL competencies:

Medway’s Approach to Fostering SEL

Medway’s SEL District Vision

Develop, for all students, faculty, and parents in the Medway School Community, an environment of connectedness that values and promotes the development of empathetic global citizens.  This community will be dedicated to fostering emotional wellness, specifically through self and social awareness, self-management, relationship skills and responsible decision making.

To reach this vision MPS has developed a comprehensive SEL model that takes a tiered approach to delivering SEL. This comprehensive approach takes into account the social and emotional well-being of MPS faculty and staff and utilizes community support.

Striving to Reach SEL Best Practices

An important element of CASEL’s best practices is that schools integrate SEL in three distinct ways: explicit skill instruction, teacher instructional practices, and whole school environment.

McGovern and Burke-Memorial Elementary Schools

Medway elementary schools promote social and emotional learning through the integration of three evidence-based programs, Responsive Classroom, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, and Healthy Lifestyle Choices.

Responsive Classroom is designed to develop classrooms that are responsive to student’s emotional, social, intellectual and physical needs. Most Responsive Classroom practices are woven into daily teaching and learning activities, however, the use of 20-30 minute, daily, Morning Meetings and 5-10 minute Closing Circles, are recommended.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices serves as the base for Medway's elementary health curriculum.  As part of this curriculum, students learn and practice specific skills related to the 5 SEL competencies, self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, responsible decision making and relationship skills.
