Health Services

In support of the Whole School, Whole Child, Whole Community model our nursing team often collaborates with our school counselors and health educators to provide preventative care and education.  In addition to preventative care, Medway’s nursing team provides students with chronic, acute and emergency care. Medway’s health service department is also supported by a district physician. To reach our nursing team please click here.

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment

In March 2016, in response to the growing opioid epidemic affecting our communities, Governor Baker enacted legislation, relative to substance use, treatment, education and prevention which outlines the requirements for public schools in the Commonwealth to engage in verbal substance use screening and education: https://malegislature.gov/Laws/SessionLaws/Acts/2016/Chapter52 (see Sections 15, 63, 64, 66).

In order to help prevent students from starting to use substances, to intervene with early use, and to comply with state law, Medway Public Schools conducts an annual interview-based screening for students in grades 7 and 10.

During this interview, known as SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment), Medway Public Schools uses the CRAFFT II screening tool as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Substance Abuse.

The CRAFFT screening tool is given to students to complete in private before meeting with a licensed mental health clinician to discuss their results.  The screening tool asks all students questions about their alcohol and drug use over the last 12 months.  If a student has used alcohol or drugs in the last 12 months they will be prompted by the screening tool to answer additional questions about their substance use.

In order to ensure that the screening tool produces valid results, we will not be publishing the exact questions online. However, any parent who would like to preview the questionnaire is welcome to look it over by visiting either our MMS or MHS main office.

To learn more about SBIRT and to find out how you can support it at home, please refer to the parent support sheet to the right.
