Why should you apply to the Clinician Educator Program?
The Clinical Educator Program provides formal training in medical education, to give you the skills and tools that you need to provide consultative medical education advice and guidance for education projects. This includes practical training in curriculum design and implementation, scholarly teaching and learning, assessment and evaluation, education scholarship and leadership. The CE program gives you the tools to be a valuable educational resource for your educational environment and workplace.
The Clinical Educator program is an Area of Focused Competency Diploma program offered through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. It is designed to be concurrent with active medical practice.

AFC Program Description:
Clinician Educators are physicians with formal training in medical education, who can provide consultative medical education advice and guidance for education projects. Example areas where Clinician Educators can assist include: curriculum design and implementation, scholarly teaching and learning, assessment and evaluation, education scholarship and leadership. The goal of the CE program is to train a competent and successful Clinician Educator, who is capable of enhanced practice in this area of focused competence. Successful program completion includes acquisition of a working knowledge of the discipline, offering a valuable educational resource to the educational environment and workplace.
The Clinician Educator program is an Area of Focused Competency (AFC) Diploma Program. Royal College AFC programs are competency-based and designed for candidate participation concurrent with active medical practice. Most candidates will complete this program post-residency, although senior residents are eligible to apply.
Who can apply?
Active McMaster University faculty or senior trainees are welcome to apply. Candidates are welcome from all McMaster campuses and distributed learning sites.
Program eligibility criteria:
Current employment as a physician or enrolment in a senior postgraduate medical training position (i.e. resident or fellow) at a Canadian Institution with demonstrated proficiency and engagement in teaching
Any Royal College or Family Medicine certification or equivalent is eligible
Evidence that current clinical practice will provide opportunities for direct supervision for educational activities required of each unit (i.e. a teaching lab)
NOTE: We are accepting applications from residents and faculty members external to McMaster University, but spots are limited.
Admissions Procedures & Timeline for the Clinician Educator Program at McMaster University.
The following is a timeline for our admissions process from the 2023 cycle. Check back in January.
1) Admissions Process Official Opens - February 1st 2024
The call for applications is made. The deadline for applications is announced.
2) Admission Package Due: Friday March 8th, 2024 (by 23:59h Eastern Standard Time)

Written application will include the following items:
Personal statement (3 pages maximum; Size 12 font; ½ inch margins at the minimum) including EDI reflection.
We would like to hear in your own words, your motivation for applying to the McMaster CE program, and your plan to complete the program while carrying clinical and academic responsibilities in the following 3 years.
In addition, in line with McMaster University's policy on selection, we invite you to share how you envision you will support equity and inclusion to our community, as well as encourage the diversification of ideas and perspectives.
2 Letters of recommendation (It is suggested that referees use our Standard Letter of Recommendation – DOWNLOAD IT HERE)
Concurrent trainee applicants (i.e. is a resident or fellow during the CE diploma program) should have a minimum of 2 letters: 1 from their program director; 1 from an educator who can attest to their interests
All other applicants should submit a minimum of 2 letters: 1 from their chair/division director; 1 from an educator who can attest to their interests. If you are an EXTERNAL candidate, the educator letter should be from your potential supervisor (see below).
Curriculum Vitae (Please make sure it is up-to-date!)
External Candidates must also submit:
One-page nomination letter for a LOCAL supervisor (include a short bio of who they are and why you have selected them);
CV of potential local supervisor.
Applications will be reviewed by both current trainees and faculty members of the CE diploma program.
3) Offer of Interviews
The written application is independently reviewed and scored by members of the admissions committee in March. Top ranking individuals will be offered an interview.
The following items are considered in ranking candidates for selection to interview:
Applicant interest in medical education
Applicant suitability for the program
Strength of letters of recommendation
Strength of personal statement
4) Interviews (April):
Those that are shortlisted from the written application are selected to interview.
Interviews will take place in April.
Some candidates may be offered early admission without an interview.
The interviews are panel format conducted by the admissions committee.
Candidates are scored and ranked by the committee based on responses to a standard list of questions.
5) Notification of acceptance (No later than May).
Congratulations! Plan to attend both our in-person orientation Tuesday, June 4th, 2024 & the Geoff Norman Research Day.
6) In-person Orientation will be on June 4, 2024 (NB: Accommodations can be made for concurrently enrolled trainees to begin early or later if desired to fit within their residency calendar year. Those interested in doing so should contact the program director upon accepting the offer of admissions.)
7) Pay Your Registration Fees (Fees due in September 2024)
Internal trainees will be required to pay an internal registration fee of $6,000, and then will also be asked to register with the Royal College (an additional $1,800).
External trainees will be required to pay an external registration fee of $12,000, and then will also be asked to register with the Royal College (an additional $1,800).
