Performing Arts students had the opportunity to meet and work with musician, Josh Mitcham. Josh shared his story of becoming a musician and songwriter. The group in turn tried their hand at song writing and their finished products were quite impressive. Josh's journey applied to all and provided many great tips for those who's future lies within the performing arts.
While the weather did not cooperate for two of the three planned field trips, art students in grades 7-12 did get the opportunity to visit the KMAC Museum in downtown Louisville on February 24th. They were able to view Liora Kaplan's exhibit called "The Lighthouse is Dark Between Flashes" as well as school-age artists' work who won the Scholastic Art Contest. Additionally, students were able to learn about and participate in a hands-on art technique called screen print. It was a fantastic day!
In February, we celebrated Gifted Education Month in Kentucky. Although the weather canceled our plans to visit Frankfort for the Proclamation Signing by Governor Beshear, we still made time to discuss the importance of gifted education.
It's been a great start to the 2022-2023 school year. In addition to all the wonderful things happening in the STEAM lab, MCHS GATE meetings and Primary Talent Pool groups have also been working hard.
MCHS GATE began the year with a special message from Dr. Martin, superintendent of Meade County Schools. Dr. Martin encouraged students to work hard, help each other, and show humble swagger. The group also collected books for the schools that were damaged in the flooding that occurred in Eastern Kentucky. The high school GATE students are invited each month to check and connect with their fellow GT peers.
Leadership students along with Dr. Martin's Student Advisory Council had the opportunity to participate in the Meade County Chamber of Commerce Luncheon held October 20 at Payneville Elementary. This gave students the opportunity to meet local business owners as well as demonstrating their talents in leadership.
Monthly GATE Meetings bring the opportunity to Check & Connect with GT students. Scholarship, college, testing taking strategies, and tips for writing essays are types of information shared at the monthly meetings which are organized by the GT Council.
Students identified in the Performing Arts had the opportunity to see Fiddler on the Roof at The Kentucky Center for the Arts on October 20. This amazing experience is made possible through the generosity of The Louisville Theatrical Association who provided the tickets.
It's never too early to begin the engineering design process. Primary talent pool students around the district have worked to complete various STEAM challenges ranging from designing a trap to measuring perimeter. There has definitely been a lot of critical thinking happening with the littles!
