Higher Order Questioning Stems/Bank
It's fairly easy for a teacher to recognize a potentially gifted student when the student's behavior is seen as 'teacher pleasing' and his academic achievement is through the roof. However, there are many gifted students who are NOT identified as gifted because of their 'not so teacher pleasing' behaviors displayed within the classroom.
Not every gifted student exhibits the same characteristics all the time or in the same manner as their gifted peer. However, there are common characteristics that can be observed which may help in the identification process.
As we all know, high achieving students are invaluable to any classroom. However, high achievement is often misinterpreted as giftedness. Bertie Kingore provides a great comparison resource that demonstrates the differences between a high achiever, a gifted learner, and a creative thinker.
Finally, the identification of a gifted student goes beyond academics. Other areas of giftedness may include: Visual Art, Performing Arts (Dance, Drama, Music - both vocal and instrumental), Leadership, and Creativity. A resource titled Jot Downs lists characteristics for each of the gifted areas. This resource may help you determine whether or not a student demonstrates potential for being gifted in any particular area.
Think about the students in your classroom. Is there a student who just might fit some of the characteristics listed in the resources described above? If so, complete the appropriate nomination form for that student. Keep in mind...
Students can be nominated at any time for gifted & talented throughout grades 4-12.
Primary Talent Pool - grades K-3
Just because a student may already qualify for a gifted area does not mean they automatically qualify for other areas. The student must meet the expected criteria for identification.
Gifted students can be unorganized, quirky, passion driven, behavior problems, and twice exceptional.
If you have any questions about the identification process, feel free to contact the GT Department.
