Students must take and pass one credit from our Arts and Humanities offerings to gradute from Meade County High School.
Art, Drama, Music
Art 1
This course is a study of the basics of drawing and composition. It is grounded in 2D work and will have students practicing and completing works that have drawing fundamentals incorporated into them.
Techniques in shading techniques, stippling, blending, charcoal use, pencil, and color pencil will be taught and applied into works produced by students. As well as studies of artists throughout history that are known for drawing techniques.
The bulk of this class will require students to demonstrate competency in drawing techniques taught, as well as be efficient in the media used to produce the pieces. Practice, direct observation skills, as well as the ability to work independently is a high priority.
Art II
Art two is a more in-depth studio art experience, that requires Art 1 to be taken first as well as recommendation by the teacher before taking the class.
Art two students will continue their study of the human figure, perspective, and composition but will also look at color as an expressive element in art. Students will produce artworks that look at the history of color use and techniques by various artists.
Painting techniques, printmaking, and some 3D art forms will be explored in Art 2 as well as how to develop paintings from under sketching to added color.
Art III
Art 3 is a study of techniques and composition working toward building portfolio pieces. It will challenge students to produce works that offer unique perspectives, personal experiences, and social commentaries. Art 2 is a prerequisite for this course. Art critique will also be learned.
AP Art Grades 11 and 12 Pre-Req: Art teacher signature
This class is an advanced class that will have students working independently on portfolio building pieces as well as refine art process, create series art, and develop skills in critiquing artwork.
Art 4 Studio assignments will vary depending upon the student and their portfolio, however, the end of course portfolio will be required with 15 quality pieces in various mediums.

AP Studio- AP portfolio pieces will be worked up based on the students three guiding questions that all AP portfolio pieces will be based around.
Creative Media Arts
Digital Media Arts works on the standards of Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) in media arts. The course focuses on the use of digital means to generate original content in the form of photography, Adobe Photoshop, web page design, typography use, principles of design. Students create, refine, and present projects produced. This is a humanities credit, but can also serve those well in the business pathway of marketing, yearbook, and entrepreneurship.
Drama
Acting I Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12
Acting I focuses on fundamentals of acting, such as voice, movement, and building a character. Students will perform scenes, monologues, and study improvisation. This is a performance-based class.
Music

Chorus is open to anyone who likes to sing. This class fulfills the arts and humanities graduation requirement. All chorus students will learn music literacy and performance skills while participating in our Gospel, Christmas and Spring Concerts. Select choral students will perform in the all-district and all-state choir, as well as choral festivals at Murray State and Morehead State Universities. Being involved in chorus will allow you the opportunity to audition for the Spring Musical, as well as Madrigals, Soundwaves and Rolling Tones. These after-school groups perform in the fall and throughout the Christmas season; including appearances at local elementary schools, churches and traveling on tour to cities such as Nashville, Indianapolis, St Louis and beyond.
Concert Band Grades 9 and 10
This performance-based course is designed to study the fundamentals of music, reinforce general musical knowledge and work toward the performance based assessment events (concerts). Students in this class may also participate in the Meade County High School Marching Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble and Pep Band.
Symphonic Band Grades 10, 11, and 12 Pre-Req: Concert Band
This performance-based course is designed to study the fundamentals of music, reinforce general musical knowledge and work toward the performance based assessment events (concerts). Student in this class will also participate in the Meade County High School Marching Band Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble and Pep Band.
Piano Lab Grades 10, 11, and 12
Special Instructions: Teacher Signature Required on Selection Sheet
This course is designed for students with little or no keyboard experience who want to study piano for fun. The student begins to play music immediately. Each unit balances new information with materials that reinforce concepts presented in previous units. Theory, technique, sight reading, repertoire, harmonization, form, lead sheets, ear training and ensemble activities are taught thoroughly and consistently throughout the text. Upon completion of this course students will have a strong grasp of keyboard skills, piano repertoire and musical styles. Signature from the Piano Lab instructor is required to be placed on your schedule.
AP Music Theory - Learn to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music. You’ll develop skills by listening to, reading, writing, and performing a wide variety of music.
Music Appreciation - Students develop an understanding of music and its importance in relation to the human experience. Learning experiences include guided listening, analysis, discussion and hands on experimentation including informal performance, improvisation, or composition focused on how various styles of music apply musical elements to create expressive or aesthetic impact.
History of Visual & Performing Arts is a survey course that takes students through various time periods, including ancient, medieval, Renaissance, impressionism, and modern times. The focus is on discovering and appreciating art, music, drama, and dance forms throughout these eras. While this is not a performance course, students are given opportunities to create and learn through project-based learning experiences.
