The Circle of Courage philosophy is a profound model deeply rooted in Native American traditions, emphasizing four core Principles:
The Spirit of Belonging
The Spirit of Mastery
The Spirit of Independence,
The Spirit of Generosity.
My connection with this inspiring philosophy traces back to 2003 when I began my teaching journey as a student teacher at the "Alternative High School" within the Calgary Board of Education in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. During this pivotal period, I had the privilege of engaging with the respected elders of the Siksika and Blackfoot nations. Their deep wisdom and profound insights into the nurturing traditions of Native North American tribes, specifically concerning the youth, left an indelible mark on my educational perspective. As I continued on my path, officially starting my full-time teaching career in 2006, specializing in art and design education, I remained captivated by the potential of this philosophy. As elaborated below, I saw its remarkable capacity to enhance and sustain nurturing environments that promote effective student learning.
Belonging (Spirit of Belonging): The sense of belonging is crucial for students to feel comfortable and confident in their learning environment. This can be achieved in a visual arts classroom by creating a sense of community and inclusivity. Teachers can facilitate this by encouraging students to share their thoughts, ideas, and artistic expressions and celebrating the diversity of backgrounds and artistic perspectives. Group activities, collaborative projects, and peer support can foster a strong sense of belonging.
Mastery (Spirit of Mastery): Mastery is about pursuing excellence and competence. Students can be encouraged to set and achieve artistic goals in a visual arts classroom. Teachers should provide opportunities for students to develop their skills, explore their creativity, and express themselves through art. Constructive feedback, personalized guidance, and recognition of their achievements can motivate students to strive for mastery in their artwork.
Independence (Spirit of Independence): Encouraging independence in the classroom promotes self-expression and self-reliance. Art is a medium that allows for personal expression, and teachers can support this by giving students the freedom to explore their unique artistic voices. Providing resources, such as materials, references, and tools, and encouraging students to create independent art projects can help foster independence while still maintaining a supportive learning environment.
Generosity (Spirit of Generosity): Generosity involves giving back to the community and showing kindness to others. In the context of a visual arts classroom, students can be encouraged to use their art as a means of giving back. This could include community-oriented art projects, collaborations, or sharing their skills and knowledge with their peers. It teaches students the value of their art beyond personal expression and helps create a sense of purpose.
The Circle of Courage philosophy, when applied in a visual arts classroom, not only enhances students' artistic growth but also nurtures their overall well-being. It promotes a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel a sense of belonging, are motivated to achieve mastery, have the independence to express themselves artistically, and learn the importance of generosity and giving back to the community. This approach contributes to creating and maintaining effective environments for student learning in a high school visual arts classroom.
