The counseling program at El Monte is designed to provide opportunities for students to participate in individual and small group counseling experiences that provide support and skill building for coping with family stressors, academic struggles, and interpersonal issues.
Counseling sessions are not therapy--they are designed to be short term supports to assist your child in school success. It is not unusual for students to need focused help to strengthen their social-emotional skills in order to be more learning ready during different times in their childhood.
Many children struggle from time to time with a range of family and life circumstances that make coming to school more difficult, and I am here to offer tools and support.
Small group and individual counseling can be an excellent way for students to learn new skills, develop self-confidence, adjust behaviors, and learn to deal with challenges in healthy ways.
Ways to help ease your child's worries:
Listen and recognize that listening is a key element--though it sometimes it might not feel like enough. Pause before responding to any stated fears, and brainstorm solutions with your child.
Focus on what your child can control: sleeping habits, reading choices, co creating their schedules.
Maintain consistent, predictable routines. Eating, sleeping, movement, and fun times are all part of a healthy routine.
Practice routines that your child might feel nervous about--getting ready for school, Sunday night routines, etc...
Keep open communication with your family. Transparent and open communication build resilience during times of change.
