Expansion of Voting Rights
Amendments to the Constitution have progressively extended political rights and opportunities for participation:
The 14th Amendment: Granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S., including formerly enslaved individuals.
Note that this is in addition to the due process and equal protection clauses we studied earlier
The 15th Amendment: Granted African American men the right to vote.
The 17th Amendment: In the Constitution, senators were originally selected by state legislatures, so rather than the people of Georgia voting for our senators, our senator would be chosen by the Georgia legislature. This led to a lot of corruption, however, and the Seventeenth Amendment changed this to a direct popular vote, which we have today.
The 19th Amendment: Granted women the right to vote.
The 24th Amendment: Eliminated poll taxes, which many Southern states had used as a way to keep African Americans from voting.
The 26th Amendment: Lowered the voting age to 18.
