10/22-2/23 TIGER TALK

( 2/22/23)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

Hello and happy vacation week.  We hope you are either on an adventure or having a restful break.  Sand castles or snow forts, either are a ton of fun!

If you having a rising freshman, please make sure to mark your calendars for March 9th at 6:30.  Parents and guardians are invited to learn more about what MDI high school is all about.

Ice fishing with Mr. Cote was a success.  Please check out the pictures below to see all the fun from the first time fishers to a few veterans.  What did they all have in common?  Tons of fun on the ice with friends.

Fifth grade loved school so much they decided to sleep at school!!!  Yes, you heard me, they slept at school!  About 25 students had a school slumber party: slept in the gym, watched a movie, ate pizza, had a talent show, and enjoyed an early school breakfast last week.  And here I didn't think anyone loved school as much as I do!!!

Two spirit days in one week!  Valentine's Day was full of love and fun.  Students exchanged valentines, wore the colors of love, and were full of smiles.   Pajama Day wrapped up the week.

Our Outing Club is offering an exciting winter weekend adventure March 3-5.  Please check here for more details: Winter Adventure Weekend Info and Winter Adventure Weekend Sign Up

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

Congratulations to our boys basketball team for winning the championship!!!  It was a battle, one that Blue Hill fought bravely.  In the end, our tigers pulled out a hard fought victory.  Amazing.  And did you know that this is Coach Tomlinson's second undefeated season?!?!  It was a super fun game with our team being cheered on by our awesome cheer squad and a gym full of excited fans.  It was quite the night and dedicated to our tiger Wyatt that couldn't be with us (but we sure missed him).

Here is the link if you are interested in learning more about the district summer school program: Summer School 2023.

What is #LoveTeaching week?  It is a grassroots campaign started by teachers in 2015 as an opportunity to celebrate teaching, leading, and learning in a way that unites and invigorates and unites educators around the world.  Check out the #LoveTeaching pictures made by our students in music classes below.

The PTSA held a family movie night at CES on Friday.  They had a great turnout and full was had by all.  Thank you to Camden National Bank for the use of their popcorn machine.  I think the 5th grade will put it to good use during their "sleep in" this Thursday...

ICE FISHING WITH MR. COTE:  Are you in 5th or 6th grade and always wanted to go ice fishing?  Well here is your chance!  Students interested in spedning an afternoon on Hamilton Pond can sign up outside of the Science room.  The 5th grade will go on Monday, February 13th and the 6th grade will go on Tuesday, Februrary 14th.  Students will ride Bus A to the pond and parent pick-up is at 4:45 at the boat launch on Hamilton's Pond.  Students do not need to bring any fishing gear, just winter clothing.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Cote (bcote@mdirss.org).

Our Outing Club is offering an exciting winter weekend adventure March 3-5.  Please check here for more details: Winter Adventure Weekend Info and Winter Adventure Weekend Sign Up

We have had two people tested positive for Covid-19 last week.

Below are some pictures from the big game, 4th grade weaving, 100th day celebrations, a COA student read aloud (of the book she wrote!!!), outdoor recess fun, cooperative learning in 1st grade, Dungeons & Dragons, and so much more!

 ( 2/4/23)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

We made it through the freeze!!!  Wow, that was some crazy temperatures over the last few days.  A huge thank you to everyone that helped keep our students safe through those plummeting temperatures, especially our brave bus drivers!!!

We are coming up to our 100th day of school this week.  Hard to believe, but true!  And it is time to start thinking about summer camps and summer plans.  Here is the link if you are interested in learning more about the district summer school program: Summer School 2023

We were excited to have one of our favorite speakers return to CES.  Robert Shettely visited Mrs. Hanna's 7th grade classes to speak with students about his "Americans Who Tell The Truth"  Portrait  Series.  Students in Mrs. Hanna's classes studied Mr. Shetterly's website and chose a "Truth Teller" to report on during his visit.  Mr. Shetterly's visit was funded by a generous grant from the PTSA.

Speaking of the PTSA will be holding a family movie night this Friday.  Fliers went home last week and there is more info on the community news page of this site.  We have an amazing PTSA and they are always looking for new members if you are interested!!!  Please contact Jen Dougherty (jdougherty@mdirss.org) for more information.

Basketball playoff time!  Our boys team has a game Monday night and if they win, they will play in the championship game at the high school on Thursday.  We would love to have a big tiger turnout if we make it to the finals on Thursday and hope to see as many CES peeps at the game as possible!

The Emerson Cheerleaders led our little future cheerleaders in instruction for motions, jumps, cheers and basic stunting. Everyone had so much fun (see pics below). If our basketball teams make it to the championship games, we would like to invite any of the students who joined us today  to join us on in our crowd cheers between quarters at the highschool during the game.

We have had one person associated with the Emerson building test positive for Covid-19 over the weekend.

Upcoming/Important Dates

A new offering at Conners Emerson is a middle school elective in photojournalism in partnership with the Mount Desert Islander to publish student writing, photos, and artwork as well as school news in the newspaper.  This would also apply to the Islander’s digital publication. Publication will include student first names and the school they attend.  The photojournalists may like to report classwork and news from any grade, so even younger students may appear in the paper.  Please fill out this form so we know if  we have permission to publish writing, photos and artwork along with student first names and the school they attend in the Islander. If you have more than one child, please fill it out for each student.  If you do not respond, the assumption is we will NOT include photos/work from this student in the Islander.  Here is  this link .

 ( 1/29/23)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

Report cards were mailed out on Friday.  If you don't receive them by Wednesday, please contact Miss Taylor.  As always, if you have any questions or would like to meet your child's teacher, please don't hesitate to reach out.  We are always excited to talk about the learning going on here at Conners Emerson!

I also ask that you look carefully at the top of the report cards where the attendance data is listed.  Students that are chronically tardy miss valuable social interactions, the time to get settled in and ready for their days as well as feeling anxious about walking into a classroom where learning is underway, disrupting the learning of others, and missing out on important updates/instructions for the day.  All students should be at school no later than 8:15.  If a student has been absent 9 times, that is approximately 10% of the school days so far this year.  If a student has been absent 18 days, that is almost 20% or 1 out of every 5 days.  We know that we ask parents to keep their children home when sick and we do really appreciate your help in keeping everyone healthy.  It is also important to realize that absences due to family vacations or extended weekends impact the learning of students.

Though we are months away from our next parent-teacher conferences, the district is asking parents to fill out a short survey.  We would love to hear your thoughts!

You may have heard that we had a few leaks from the wind and rain on Thursday.  Twenty-two leaks to be exact.  The ice builds up on our roofs causing old leaks to reappear and new leaks to add to our collection.  We have had roofers on site helping us over the weekend and our custodial staff will be busy replacing ceiling tiles.  Unfortunately, these leaks have moved the reopening of our library back by about a week.  We did turn lemons into lemonade on Friday when we had to cancel the home basketball games at CES due to a leak in the middle of the gym floor but were able to move them to the YMCA.  It made for very exciting back-to-back matchups with the Lamoine Lions due to the balcony/track fans cheering the players on.

The 8th graders are holding a Valentine's Day fundraiser to help meet their goal for their class trip.  Please see below for details.

Our after school offerings are heating up in the coldest part of the winter.  In addition  to middle school sports, we have many, many different clubs being held throughout the week from Dungeons and Dragons, Outdoor Art, Chess Club, Math Club, Show Stoppers, Outing Club, and Science Olympiad to name a few.  Between the winter and spring sports seasons, we will be offering more selections so be on the lookout!  Our goal is to offer a variety of after school options so that all students can find something that speaks to them, they have an opportunity to make connections with other students, and also to learn something new.

Our Math Counts team scored a fantastic 2nd place in their competition this weekend and are now onto states!!!  Wow!!!

Third graders just finished up their Patricia Palacoo Author Study. Students read several books written by Polacco and then wrote a summary, chose a character to analyze, and found important vocabulary words. At the end of the Author Study, students chose a final project to do based on one of the books they read.

Mrs. Galeaz's class designed their own book bags.  Fantastic job!!!  And they are also practicing their "trick" words with shaving cream (and cleaning their desks too!).

Mrs. Mountford's class blasted off into outer space with their rocket ships and astronaut self-portraits.

Mike Duffy was a guest artist for the 5-6 After School Art Club.

Welcome to the start of the second semester!  How are we at the halfway point of the school year already!!!  We will be busy printing report cards this week and will send them out either Friday or next Monday.

The library will remain closed this week.  Students can return books, but we are unable to access our collection until the library work is complete which is taking longer than we had originally anticipated.

You are invited to the 3rd Community Forum to discuss the new school building project on Wednesday, January 25th from 5:00-6:30 in the CES cafeteria.  We will be learning the about the decision whether to renovate or build new as well as look at project concept design.

A reminder that there is no school on Monday, January 23rd for a teacher professional day.

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

I hope everyone has had an uneventful and safe weekend with the weird weather we are having.  It seems like a good day to relax and reflect on why we have this day off from school while contemplating our own dreams.

Two covid positive cases were reported over the weekend in grades 3 and 4.  We are finding that people have shown symptoms of illness for 2-3 days before testing positive.  If your child is feeling sick, please keep them home.

The library will remain closed this week.  Students can return books, but we are unable to access our collection until the library work is complete.  This will be a great time for students to explore their classroom libraries.  What a great segway to invite you to the 3rd Community Forum to discuss the new school building project on Wednesday, January 25th from 5:00-6:30 in the CES cafeteria.  We will be learning the about the decision whether to renovate or build new as well as look at project concept design.  Our school buildings are... struggling... and we would love your support and ideas!

8th graders- great job on your Wonder and Inquiry Fair!!!  Wow!  We will be sure to post some pictures on the Tiger Talk this week.  If you see an 8th grader, ask them about their project.

All students are outside for part of their day, every day, no matter the weather or temperature.  Students walk between the buildings for classes and lunch.  They also have at least 3 recess/breaks per day.  Please make sure that all students K-4 have snow pants, winter boots, hats, and gloves EVERYDAY.  Middle schoolers should have a warm coat and winter boots.

A reminder that there is no school on Friday, January 20th or Monday, January 23rd for teacher professional days.

Wow, that winter concert was amazing!!!  Our musicians once again astounded us with their singing and playing.  Great job to Mrs. Edmondson and Mr. Granholm for their months of practice with our students.  And a shout out to the Show Stoppers who helped make the show possible!!!  Loved it!!!

The first semester is winding down and end on January 19th.  Reports will be send out the following week.  We are very excited to share with you the progress that your child(ren) have made so far this year.

Be on the look out for after school clubs and activities.  We want to make sure that our students don't a catch a case of cabin fever during the winter months!  We will post when clubs and activities become available.

Hope you have had a great weekend!

Winter Concert Update: Grades 2-8 will have their Winter concert on Friday, January 6th.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Edmondson, Mr. Granholm, and Mr. Dionne for their flexibility and creativity in making this night possible.  (Our theme is a "Winter Wonderland" so if anyone has any white holiday decorations that we could borrow to make our gym look extra special, please give me a holler!)

We had a very festive week at CES from surprise carollers to creative holiday garb to classroom parties to buddy readers to random acts of kindness.  I invite you to scroll through the pictures below to get a sense of what it means to be a tiger and be part of our truly amazing school community.

Upcoming/Important Dates

There is nothing quite like music with Mr. Granholm whether it is in class, in the cafeteria, or with his boombox in the mornings.  We were also treated to carrolling from the MDIHS Choir and from Mrs. Craighead's room.

Here are a few photos from our Ho-Ho-Holiday Runway Show.  These outfits did not disappoint!!!

The holiday festivities were...  well, festive as usual!!!  Some classes used marshmallows for STEAM projects, other classes made crafts and families gifts, while others settled in with their jammies for a show.

Our fifth graders invited the younger grades in for Buddy Reads last week.  Here is a sneak peek of their time reading with our Kindergartners.

We may not have had a lot of snow, but we sure made the most of what we had!

And a few more pictures of our afternoon art club admiring their buoys down by the pier (and eating icecream).  In PE class, grade 3 made "hula huts", and an enormous thank you to our PTSA for organizing a Cookie Day in our Teachers' Rooms.  They were delish!!!  But, I think my favorite picture of the week is our Conners Office Helpers and Grounds Stewards being treated to a cup of hot chocolate and laughing at Tammy jokes.

(12/18/22)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

It is our sincere hope that by taking an extra day on Friday, our school community was able to rest and recover.  We also want to thank all of our CES families for their flexibility, understanding, and support last week as we navigated through high numbers of illnesses.

Some of our fourth graders joined Mrs. Edmondson in singing a song for Ukraine.  They joined students from all over the world to show their support through their love of music.  Here is the link if you would like to see more: https://youtu.be/26pgp_7c3z8  We are also heartbroken that our winter concerts were delayed and we will have more info for you soon on when we are able to reschedule.

Rebecca, Kali, and Maggie, our Conners Office Helpers, have decided that Monday is an unofficial Bus Driver Appreciation Day.  We have special treats planned for them as well as cards from our students, but we welcome you to give them an extra wave and a smile tomorrow!  Speaking of doing something nice, our PTSA is still taking donations for the CES CARES program which helps struggling families in our community with gift certificates to help make everyone's holidays a merry one.

There is a busy week for our Tiger sports this week!  Good luck to all of our athletes and we invite all of you to catch one of their games.  So much fun!  We also have two spirit days this week.  Students are invited to wear the holiday best or holiday-est on Wednesday.  We can't wait to see what you will come up with.  And Thursday is a Pajama day!!!

Please send all students K-4 with snow pants and winter boots (and warm clothes for middle schoolers too).  We want to make sure that our students can get the most out of their recess times and they can only do that if they have the proper winter gear.  If you need assistance with getting winter gear for your children, please contact Nurse Melissa and Nurse Michelle.

December 15, 2022

Dear CES Families,

The number of students out with illness has declined from a high of 94 students out last Friday to hovering at 67 students today.  We have had another reported case of Covid in the Emerson building, a few cases of RSV, and Influenza A in addition to students being sick with colds and coughs.

Our staff has now "caught" what it is that our students have had.  We had 19 staff members out on Tuesday, 23 staff out yesterday and have 19 staff out today with many staff members coming into school that should really be home.  We also have the majority of our support staff out sick (secretaries and custodians) which are essential to run our school safely in addition to classroom teachers, specials teachers and ed techs who are needed to teach, supervise, and assist students.

There will be NO school on Friday, December 16th.

Closing a school for a day is a very difficult decision and one that we do not take lightly.  With the staff that are currently out sick, we do not feel that we can safely and appropriately open our school tomorrow.  It really is “who” is out rather than the number of staff out that guided our decision.  Our hope is that students and staff can take an additional day to rest and recover so that we are all healthy and ready to learn for next week.  Both Monday and tomorrow are considered "school cancellation days" and are treated like a snow day.

We understand that both Monday and tomorrow are a hardship on our working families and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  Please know that we have considered many options and feel this is the safest option for students and staff.  Thank you for your continued support.

December 9, 2022

Dear CES Families,

This week we have seen a significant increase in the number of students and staff who have been absent due to respiratory illness, flu-like symptoms, and/or being Covid-19 positive.  Today we had approximately 30% of our student population absent in addition to approximately 20% of our staff.

School will be cancelled on Monday, December 12th

We have been in continuous communication with the Maine CDC due to our outbreak status and it is their recommendation that our school buildings be closed for a period of 3 days in order to help break this cycle of illness.  This will allow our custodial team time to disinfect and deep clean our buildings and give our staff and students time to rest and recover.

If your child becomes ill or shows symptoms of illness over the weekend, please email either Mrs. Webster, Miss Taylor, or our school nurses so that we have an accurate account of how many of our students/staff are ill and their symptoms.

We understand that this will be a hardship on families and appreciate your continued support in keeping our school community safe.

(All extra-curricular activities are cancelled for Monday.  Tuesday school lunch will be what would have been served on Monday: hamburgers.)

(12/11/22)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

There will be no school tomorrow on Monday, December 12th.  Please see the letter above.  Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to seeing everyone Tuesday all rested and ready to learn!

If your child is experiencing symptoms of illness, please keep them home.  Illnesses reported last week ranged from the Flu, RSV, strep throat, common colds, and positive Covid-19 cases.  If you need home testing kits for Covid-19, we are happy to either send some home with your child or you can pick them up at the office.

Mrs. Edmondson and Mr. Granholm are excited to showcase the magical music that our students have been making at school.  The concert for students in grades 2-4 will be on Wednesday at 6pm.  The concert for middle school will be Thursday at 6pm.  We hope to see you all there!

With the cold weather upon us, it is important that you send your children to school with warm clothes every day.  Students are outside when they first arrive in the morning, have recesses, and walk between buildings everyday.  If you need help in getting warm clothes for your children, please contact the school nurses.  We are happy to help!

The holiday season is upon us which means celebrations, fun activities, and events.  Please contact your classroom teacher BEFORE sending in any food or treats.  We ask that our classroom holiday parties consist of healthy choices such as popcorn and apple juice to accommodate all allergies/diets and that sugary snacks are saved for outside of school.

Thank you again for all of your support.

FROM THE PTSA -

Dear Conners Emerson and Bar Harbor community,

We have some families in our CES community who struggle over the winter months. In 2018 the PTSA introduced CES CARES, a program that distributes gift cards to help support CES families in need. The holidays are a perfect time to spread goodwill, so if you are able, please consider making a donation to lend a helping hand to members of our CES family. 100% OF YOUR DONATION will go towards purchasing gift cards to be distributed before the holidays to those families who could use some extra support at this time.

Please send donations to the school in an envelope marked “CES CARES” with a student, or mail donations to:

Conners Emerson School

Attn: PTSA

11 Eagle Lake Road

Bar Harbor, ME 04609

Checks can be made out to “CES PTSA” with “CES CARES” in the memo.

Thank you for supporting our school community!

The Annual Cookie Extravaganza for our wonderful teachers & staff will be on Tuesday December 20!

Join in on the holiday fun and help us treat teachers & staff to a delicious array of goodies in the staff rooms.

For more information and to sign up to provide 2 dozen cookies, please click here: https://forms.gle/szmgmt6UMJ2BVvtV6

Thank you!

(12/4/22)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

First of all, I want to thank our fifth grade class for pranking me on my birthday.  You got me!!!  But don't worry, I am planning my revenge....

Students will be practicing a Shelter-in-Place drill within their classrooms this week and we will have a school-wide drill next week.  Our messaging to students is that a Fire Drill is for times when it is unsafe to be in the building and a Shelter-in-Place Drill is for times when it is unsafe to be outside of the building.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Schools are required to upload attendance data to the state for any students that are classified as chronically absent or truant due to their school attendance.  In Maine, chronic absenteeism is defined as students being absent for more that 10% of the school days they are enrolled.  Truancy is defined as 7 full days of unexcused absences or 5 consecutive school days of unexcused absences for grades K-6 or 10 full days of unexcused absences or 7 consecutive school days of unexcused absences.  If your child is going to be absent from school, please contact Miss Taylor either by email or call the office at 288-3631.  If a student is absent from school, they are not allowed to attend after school activities that evening (including sports and dances).  We do understand that there are many illnesses going around, that we are asking you to keep your children home if showing symptoms of illness, and that families take vacations throughout the winter, but we also know that in order for our students to grow and learn, they need to be in school.

Ms. Ryan and Mrs. Maurais had their afternoon activity group design and paint buoys to be added to the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce Christmas Tree in Harbor Park.  This community activity was designed to show support to our local lobster men and women.  (and to spread a little Christmas cheer!)

Our basketball teams and cheer squad are ramping up for a busy sports season.  We invite all of you to join us for game or join the Conners Emerson Athletics page on Facebook when we are able to commentate games.

Are you feeling that you need a little more time to wrap gifts this year?  Do you think a few hours right before Christmas could do the trick?  The 8th grade class is hosting a fundraiser this month to raise money for their class trip which could be a win-win for all!  Kids' Night Out will be Thursday, Dec. 22nd from 5-8pm for students in K-4.  There are only 25 slots and I know they are going to fill up quickly (SIGN UP HERE)!  Please contact Ms. McConomy if you have any questions (kmcconomy@mdirss.org)

Our new boiler is being installed this week.  There may be times that they will need to shut the system down for a short amount of time during the day.  Please be sure to send your children to school with warm clothes and layers!  It is also important that they come to school with a warm coat, winter hat, snow boots, and hats/mittens.  Every student is outside every day so we want to make sure they have the right clothing.  If you are struggling to get the appropriate winter gear for your children, please contact Nurse Melissa or Nurse Michelle for some assistance.  We are also accepting donations of warm winter coats, boots, snow pants, and gloves that are clean and in good shape.  (We often get donations for our younger students, but remember that we have students taller than us in our building!!!)

A huge shoutout to Bentley and Harrison on their commitment to reading outside of the classroom!  I hear that the rest of 4th grade is setting their reading goals too.  That is perfect timing with all the new books heading into the classrooms this month!!!  And a huge shoutout to Brielle's dad for helping us repair our Conners Castle slide!

Our PE classes were having way too much fun with parachutes this week.  I heard one of the fun games is called Sharks and Lifeguards???

Here are a few pictures from our fourteenth week... (thank you staff and parents for helping me with pictures; keep them coming!!!)

(11/20/22)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

Wow, what a busy week.  We packed a lot into these five days.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Collins for jumping on a Kindergarten interest.  They had heard drumming from their playground and found out it was coming from a group of students from COA.  The students came on Tuesday and played for students in grades K-2.  Amazing!!!

Ms. Ryan organized a K-8 author visit with Anna Crowley.  Grades K-2 learned about her bravery and what it can accomplish with her book Courage Like Kate.  Grade 5 participated in a writer's workshop with using Courage Like Kate, learning how to use primary sources to prove or disprove Kate's heroism.  Grades 3 read Chowder Rules and learned how one small act can set things in motion during a writer's workshop while Grade 4 concentrated on puns and a silly writing prompt.  Grades 6-8 participated in writer's workshops concentrating storytelling and different ways to get stories out of their bodies and into the world.

In PE this week the students boarded their starships and engaged in intergalactic battle in the game of Star Wars. Under the black lights, they rolled balls at pins to try to knock them over. Everything was glowing, including the kids!

Winter sports tryout happened earlier this week and our teams are off and running.  I hope everyone has a chance to catch a basketball game and see our cheerleaders!!!  If anyone is interested in learning how to officiate a basketball game, please contact Mr. Dionne.

We had an unbelievable amount of food donated for the local Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Thank you to all of you for your donations which will help out local families, neighbors, and friends.  Mixed groups of students got together and decorated turkey boxes on Friday to go with our food donations.  Awesome things happen when we get our youngers and olders together, working on a project and they certainly did not disappoint!

Second and fifth graders partnered this week to paint gratitude jars together. The students then shared some things they were grateful for.

The weather is getting colder and we ask that you send your children in layers.  Every student (even middle schoolers) should be bringing to school a winter coat, winter footwear, warm hat, mittens/gloves and snow pants for K-4/5.  All students will be going outside for recess as long as the feels like temperature is around 20 degrees.  If you are struggling to find winter gear, please contact our school nurses.

Hope you had a great long weekend and thank you to all of our veterans,

Mrs. Webster

(11/13/22)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

Thanksgiving break is right around the corner which means it is time for the CES Annual Food Drive.  We have circulated a list of suggested items per grade (so we don't end up with thousands of cans of peas and not stuffing).  All food donations will be stored in classrooms until Friday when students decorated turkey boxes and our donations are picked up.

Winter sports start this week and the parent info meeting was postponed until tomorrow from 5:30-6:00 pm.  If your child did not play a fall sport, they will need to have an updated physical and register in RANKONE before being able to participate.  Please contact Mr. Dionne and/or Nurse Melissa if you have any questions.

Thank you to those of you that attended the second Community Forum for the school building project.  If you wish to learn more about the new school build, please check out our website: ConnersEmersonBuildingForOurFuture.com

MDIRSS is holding a job fair at the high school on Thursday, November 17th.  If you are interested in learning more about positions open at Conners Emerson or within the district, please contact Mrs. Webster (hwebster@mdirss.org) or join us on Thursday!

If your child will be absent from school or your family is going away on a vacation, please contact Miss Taylor (288-3631 or thamor@mdirss.org).  We also ask that if your child is showing symptoms of illness that they are kept home from school.

We are pleased to announce the return of the Conners Emerson Winter Concerts!

Wednesday, December 14 at 6:00 will feature the all students in grades 2-4 singing delightful holiday songs, 3-4 string orchestra, grade 2 beginning strings, grade 3 xylophones and boomwhackers.  Thursday, December 15 at 6:00 will feature the 5-8 bands, orchestra, chorus and more!  The Dobbs Productions will be filming both performances and will be aired the following week.

Recently the first grader in Mrs. Young's room completed a pumpkin seed counting activity. The students estimated the number of seeds in a pumpkin, cut it open, scooped out the seeds and then washed and dried them. Then they counted the seeds into groups of 10 and skip counted by 10’s and 100’s to see how many seeds were in their pumpkins. At the end, they learned there was over 1,200 seeds in all 3 pumpkins. The students also learned a trick to help them guess how many seeds are in a pumpkin. (Hint: It doesn’t have to do with the size of the pumpkin but rather the lines on the outside!

Below are some great pictures of our seventh graders learning about the Silk Road timeline and how negative numbers help to understand/organize events, a busy GT room, Ms. Ryan's afternoon elective to help prep food at OPEN TABLE, grade six visiting the Jesup to review new books, Pajama Day Racing fun (congrats to our tigers that participated in bed races), and a glimpse into third/fourth/sixth grades.

Hope you had a great long weekend and thank you to all of our veterans,

Mrs. Webster

Upcoming/Important Dates

Here are a few pictures from our eleventh week... (thank you staff and parents for helping me with pictures; keep them coming!!!)

(11/6/22)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

This has been an emotional week for our entire island with the lockdown that happened at the high school on Tuesday.  Thank you for your flexibility with the changes in the after school transportation, to our staff that stayed late to make sure our students were picked up, to our students who were patient with all of the changes, and a thank you to our bus drivers that stayed late into the evening helping with the high school students.  Our CES staff has shelter-in-place drills scheduled to happen this month and we will then communicate with parents and practice with students similar to last year.  We take the safety and security of everyone in our school community very seriously and work year round on our preparation, protocols, and drills.

I know the calendar says November, but it sure doesn't feel like it!  The weather has been absolutely amazing.  We have tried to take advantage of the warmer temps by using our Nature Trail, holding classes outside when possible, and even having an impromptu dance/popsicle party on Wednesday (was that a congo line???).  Fingers crossed the higher temps will hang around for a little while longer...

Fall sports are in the books and what a great season our tiger athletes had.  Our cross-country team wrapped up their season with a great showing at the high school.  Our soccer team made it to championship game v. Lamoine and even though they didn't win, it was an awesome game.  Winter sports sign-ups for basketball and cheering are HERE.  All students should be signing up so that we can get an idea of the numbers and coaches needed.

The Outdoor Club participated in Take Pride In Acadia Day. Thank you Outdoor Club for taking care of our historic carriage roads and giving back to the park (see pics below)!  Speaking of outdoors, grade 3 Art classes made nature mandalas with Mrs. Maurais.

If your child will be absent from school or your family is going away on a vacation, please contact Miss Taylor (288-3631 or thamor@mdirss.org).  We also ask that if your child is showing symptoms of illness that they are kept home from school.  Though our covid numbers have declined, we are seeing the emergence of other viruses surfacing from RSV to sore throats, to heavy coughs.  If you have any questions, you are welcome to call our school nurses.  Our student flu clinic was a huge success with 60 students getting their shots (thank you Nurse Melissa and Nurse Michelle).  We had one people associated with the Conners building test positive for Covid-19 last week.

Hope you had a great weekend,

Mrs. Webster

Here are a few pictures from our tenth week... (thank you staff and parents for helping me with pictures; keep them coming!!!)

  (10/30/22)

From the desk of Mrs. Webster...

Wow, what a week!  A huge shout out to our teachers that spent the week planning and meeting with parents in addition to their regular teaching schedule.  We hope you were able to find a conference time to hear about all of the learning experiences being had by your children.  If you weren't able to meet, feel free to reach out to teachers to find another time.

Thank you to Jolene and Lily for taking the time to jazz up our school sidewalk and make our school a more welcoming place.  It looks amazing !!!  Next week is the Week of Welcome for our Civil Rights Teams.  Keep up the great work!

The CES Cross-Country team has its last meet of the season at the high school on Wednesday at 3:30.  We would love to see you there to help cheer our runners as they cross the finish line for the last time this season.  Last week our runners competed in the Airline Invitational.  Congrats to Rebecca for her 8th place finish and Gray for 1st in Co-ed.  Gray was also featured on the news if you want to check it out the news story.

Our soccer team pulled out a victory vs. Blue Hill last week and has advanced to the championship game on Thursday at the high school at 6pm under the lights.  We hope to see you all there to cheer on our tigers and encourage everyone to WEAR GREEN to show your support!

Winter sports sign-ups for basketball and cheering are HERE.  All students should be signing up so that we can get an idea of the numbers and coaches needed.

We had another group of students in the news this week.  Ms. Hanna's 8th grade science class is learning about arsenic in well water and collaborating with local education partnerships to help residents test their water.  Channel 7 was at our school learning more about this amazing unit.  Click here to see the clip.

Students in first grade designed and built their own water towers using toothpicks, clay, straws, popsicle sticks and skewers.  The students were challenged to make a town 6-8" tall and be able to hold a plate with a cup of water on it to mimic a real water tower.  This activity goes along with their current Go2Science unit where students are learning about a project to find drinkable water at the HIP Academy in Kenya.  See below for pictures!

Grade 6 had some special guests from COA join them to talk about college and post-high school opportunities.  Our students were so engaged that this talk could have gone on for hours!  Students prepared questions in advance such as "Is there a ton of homework?" and "I am nervous about going to college- were you nervous and what can I do not to be nervous?" Thank you Ms. Rosinski for arranging this panel.

The Halloween Parade was a huge success!!!  So much fun!!!  We hoped you were able to catch some of the costumes and excitement as grades 1-8 headed through town.  And I want to thank Mr. Granholm and our amazing marching band!!!!  Wow, so much fun.  We have added some pictures below, but if you took some and would like to share, please send to Mrs. Webster (hwebster@mdirss.org or text to 207-518-3329).  Even though tomorrow is officially Halloween, we did our fun and celebrating last week.  We ask that students DO NOT WEAR COSTUMES to school tomorrow.  Halloween colors?  Sure!  Halloween costumes?  Nope.

I hope you are sitting down when you hear this news....  Our PTSA raised over $27,000 for their November raffle.  Yes, that is right.  Over $27,000!!!!  This money goes to support teacher and students in a variety of ways and we really appreciate everyone's participation to make this fundraiser so successful.  (Now let's get pulling some of those prizes!!!)

We had one people associated with the Conners building test positive for Covid-19 last week.

Hope you had a great weekend,

Mrs. Webster
