Each period of internship on a student schedule requires 75 hours of work time at the internship. Therefore, a double period intern must work 150 hours per semester. Students will not receive credit if they do not meet the hours requirement.
Internships are not guaranteed. It is up to the student to secure a placement with the support of the internship teacher. Students do not just "pick an internship" from a list. See the Finding Placements page for more detailed information.
Students must provide their own transportation, which may include walking, public transportation, driving, or getting a ride. Students should think about transportation as they work to find internships.
Students attend seminar class 1 time each week. Seminar occurs on Monday the first period that the student's internship / travel begins. Seminar class supports the development of professionalism skills and internship support.
Students may complete a morning of afternoon internship. Internship is placed on the student schedule in place of other courses. Students with a double period internship may also request a travel period. Travel periods do not earn credit or a grade. This period allows students time to transition to their internship location for their learning experience. Internship periods are an honors level class.
Students do not have to work during their actual class release periods. Actual work schedule is flexible based on what works best for both the student & internship site. Students may work any day of the week. Some sites may require shifts of a minimum length.
Students who wish to join the internship program must complete an application. Students who complete the interest form will receive a link to join a Canvas Course. The application can be found on the Canvas Course. The application opens in January of each school year and is due in early March.
Students may choose to complete an internship over the summer. Students MUST join the summer internship course, attend seminar classes over the summer, complete seminar assignments, & complete hours. Students can earn either a 0.5 credit for 75 hours worked or 1.0 credit for 150 hours worked.
