Indentured Servants
The colonists who came to St. Mary's City were all looking for a better life and new opportunities. Many colonists relaized that being poor in England meant they would be poor all their life. However in Maryland, colonists who worked hard could own land and make a profit. Indentured servants were poor colonists who had their trip to Maryland paid for them. In return, the indentured servant worked for that person for several years. At the end of their indenture, these colonists also became land owners! Would you sign up to be an indentured servant?
