The 2020 election has been called for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Not only does this mark the end of the Trump presidency, making him the first incumbent president to lose a second term since 1992, it also makes Harris the first woman to ever be elected as the Vice President of the United States of America.
This is a monumental occasion for young women and girls all over the country, especially women of color. Harris is the daughter of Shyamala Copalan, an immigrant from India, and Donald J. Harris, an immigrant from British Jamaica. This also makes her the first child of immigrants to be elected to be the Vice Presidency.
Over the past four years, with Donald Trump as our president, racism, sexism, and many other forms of bigotry have been encouraged and accepted in a way this generation has never seen. President Trump has refused to condemn white supremacists, and during the 2020 campaign he called Harris a “monster” and “unlikeable.” Trump also stated during a rally that "We’re getting your husbands back to work. Everybody wants it," insinuating that women do not have jobs to get back to and that their job is in the home, which is extremely demeaning. After all of this disgraceful behavior from the president, his administration, and supporters, it is encouraging that we now have an African American woman at the head of our country, who cares about inclusivity and diversity.
Harris’ historic win is an inspiration to me and people all over our country. She is an intelligent, respectable, strong woman who wants the best for our country and it is refreshing that the people have elected a black woman to the vice presidency. Racism, sexism, discrimination, xenophobia, and bigotry are not tolerable. We must condemn these concepts, treat everyone with respect and equality, and acknowledge that everyone in this country has the ability to become the President or Vice President of the United States. Harris represents these American ideals.
