January 16, 2026Apple released its latest update, iOS 26, Sep. 15, increasing the use of AI technology and giving phones an updated, modern look. Apple skipped from iOS 18 to 26 to improve cohesion with the calendar year. The update is now available on all compatible iPhones, bringing a brighter look, a new level of personalization in chats, and improved communication.
Apple's main selling point with this software is the new Liquid Glass design. This feature has the quality and transparency of glass, making the phone look more physically responsive. Liquid Glass is shared across the Apple ecosystem, making it easier to use Apple products with one another. In addition, the design of the home screen and lock screen has improved with added personalization. Lock screens now come to life with 3D images, and the time adapts to the user’s wallpaper, keeping the subject in view. Home screen customization allows app icons to be any color of the user’s choice for an adaptable look.
Internally, Apple Intelligence is now more prominent than ever. Apple Intelligence improves communication by introducing live translation of messages, calls, and FaceTime captions. Visual intelligence allows users to search across apps, ask questions, and utilize the visuals on-screen. Apple’s intelligent technology also improves efficiency for users by summarizing and prioritizing their notifications. For fun, the image playground can take a typed description and create Genmojis or new images by integrating ChatGPT. For safety, unknown calls and texts are screened, helping users decide whether or not to engage.
Diego Ochoa Diaz, an Einstein senior who considers himself tech-savvy, tested the update for two days. “I thought Apple tried too hard to replicate other models, so I don’t think they delivered to customers' wants,” Ochoa Diaz said. “Their design was a major change, but I just don’t think it had the right crowd reaction.”
This update is a bold step for Apple, introducing significant change. While reactions remain mixed, only time will tell if iOS 26 earns long-lasting consumer approval.
