November 10, 2022When thinking of shows with topics centered around suicide, domestic abuse, struggles of gender identity, a show that includes images of Glee character Sue Sylvester wearing a hot pink wig singing Nicki Minaj’s hit record Super Bass, would probably not be the first to come to mind.
The insanely controversial, while also insanely entertaining, show made in 2009 focused on a group of students from various backgrounds coming together to annoyingly break out into musical numbers. While Glee dealt with many topics that were barely touched by the TV/movie industry and revolutional for the 2000’s , many have stated the show would not hold up in today’s climate. Director Ryan Murphy has dropped hints towards the possible reboot of Glee, the response of the public has varied, and the same question stands, Should Glee be Rebooted?
Glee star Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) has stated that she would “do it in a heartbeat” when asked about the possible revival. Many other main characters such as Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel) have disagreed and would not come back to participate in the reboot.
"No amount of money can take from me the memories I have of then, but no amount of money can make me go back and do it all over again.” Colfer stated when asked of the reunion.
More main characters would be missing, as Naya Rivera (Santana Lopez) , Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson) , and Mark Sailing (Noah Puckerman) have all passed away. Without core characters and with a spotlight upon Michele, who is powerful in vocals but is questionable in about everything else, a “Glee-Boot” looks to be the same way that Kevin Mchale (Artie Abrams) and Diana Agron (Quinn Fabray) performance of Elton John’s “I’m still standing” while being in wheelchairs looked. Simply distasteful.
Although I would pay a good amount of money to hear current songs covered by Glee characters, such as Fabray covering Lana Del Ray, Anderson covering Harry Styles, and Berry and Jesse St. James covering the duet of Taylor Swift and Bon Iver’s exile, the negatives outweigh the positives. The sheer chaos that Glee was, made it the spectacle that it is known to be today. The same amount of chaos would take a group of scientists, philosophers, and wizards to replicate. And would this mayhem even be something worth replicating? Many plot lines and jokes were able to fly under the radar in the 2000’s, but the same brash and obscene themes would result in public backlash. Omitting certain things from Glee would take away from the ambiance of the show, which is why we should rain on this certain parade, and stop believing in a glee-boot.
