November 18, 2024The Einstein boys and girls soccer teams entered the season playoffs with high expectations, taking their talents to the regional finals. Despite both teams winning their first games of the playoffs, both ended their 2024 season with a loss in the regional finals.
Einstein’s boys’ soccer finished the regular season with a 6-5-1 record and had to go on the road playing against Wheaton in their stadium known as the “Castle.” In the regular season, Einstein suffered a 2-1 loss at Wheaton after a heart-rending last-minute goal in overtime. The boys used this as motivation as they headed to Wheaton. Einstein laid Wheaton's season to rest, saying “Good Knight” with a 6-0 domination at the Castle. After the dominant win, the boys headed to Rockville to face Richard Montgomery in the regional finals. Einstein stayed close with the Rockets after scoring an 89th-minute game-tying goal by senior Matthias Meszaros to head into overtime tied 1-1. Despite tying the game, the Rockets scored a header in the last minute of the first half of overtime, giving the boys a heart-breaking loss, ending the season in the finals.
“This season was successful knowing that we had a strong season record leading up to regional finals,” junior centerback Anderson Arevalo said. “Even though we didn’t win the finals, we’re glad we took the game to overtime against a strong team and really close to winning.”
Einstein’s girls’ soccer finished the season with a 6-6 record and was set to play Richard Montgomery in the first round. The girls lost 5-0 earlier in the season against the Rockets and wanted to create a statement. Einstein had not won a single game against Richard Montgomery in three years. The Rockets’ engine was extinguished, putting an end to this streak as the Titans pulled the biggest upset of the season winning 1-0, with a goal scored in overtime by senior striker Anna Morasch. The girls shocked the division, staying on level with a team that finished 9-3-1, projected as championship contenders coming out of the regular season. With this statement win, the Titans headed to Wheaton to face the Knights for the regional finals. All tales come to an end sadly, as the Titans came up short losing 1-0 on the road.
“The biggest success of the season was beating Richard Montgomery in overtime with a sudden death victory,” girls varsity coach Jared Kavlock said. “Scoring a last second goal in the playoffs against a team who’s beaten us three years straight was a huge moment.”
The future of Einstein soccer is bright, as both teams can reflect on this season, knowing that more success lies within them.
