January 14, 2024“Led by choral director Peter Smeallie, Einstein’s Chamber and Ensemble Choir presented its twentieth Renaissance celebration on the evenings of Dec. 15 and 16, 2023. Renaissance Night is an annual performance that showcases the talents of Einstein’s various choral groups in the form of a candlelit evening, filled with the sounds of 1500s Europe.
Renaissance Night is more than just a concert; it’s an experience. Audience members are immediately greeted in the school’s lobby by chorus members decked out in Renaissance-style wardrobes, setting the scene for the upcoming performance. From there, guests are directed into the little theater. The close proximity of the singers in such a small place created an intimate atmosphere, allowing for a more interactive night. Throughout the set, performers walked around, serving guests, and singing verses. The layout allowed for interesting choreography, with certain numbers sung from the balconies.
Following the Renaissance-era theme, the night featured the guest appearance of Einstein math teacher Chris Colwander, starring as King Henry VIII. He proved to be a key part of the night’s festivities, with many songs dedicated to him and his third wife, Jane Seymour.
There was no shortage in extravagance, as the setlist included 21 songs, featuring a few modern hits like “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s and “Heart of Stone,” from the musical “Six.” Not only did the night’s festivities provide entertainment, both new and old, but the performance was also accompanied by a meal of salad, pasta, cheesecake-- and a number of quips from Smeallie.
Overall, the beloved Einstein tradition showcases the talent of Einstein’s Visual and Performing Arts program with a fun twist. It is a highly anticipated event for the performers, their family and friends, and all- around enthusiasts of the time period. So, until next year, the Einstein community will be eagerly awaiting the return of the Renaissance.
