Every year, students across Maryland choose their favorite books from a list of nominees.
The books nominated for the 2025-2026 school year can be found below.
Each time you read and review a book, you will win a prize.
When you read 3 books in a category, you will be eligible to vote for which book you think should win the award.
Black-Eyed Susan Reading Challenge
How does it work?
Read one BES Nominated book at a time. You can read the book from our library, listen to an audiobook on Sora, read an ebook on Sora, read your own copy of the book, or read the book from the public library.
Pick up a BES Reading Challenge paper from the media center that matches the category you are reading in OR access them online here:
HS Graphic Novels approved for MS
Once you have read the book, you will log your reading on the BES Challenge Paper and write a book review for the book. Sample Review linked HERE.
Each time you complete a book review, share your Google doc book review with Ms. Greco (Michele.A.Greco@mcpsmd.net) OR print it out and show Ms. Greco and come to the media center to choose a prize.
Every student who reads at least 3 books in one category (6 possible categories: Picture books, Grade 3-5 novels, Grade 3-5 graphic novels, Grade 6-8 novels, Grade 6-8 graphic novels, and high school graphic novels approved for grade 8) will be invited to a "voting" doughnut & pizza party in April to select their favorite book. The author of that book will get recognition from the state of Maryland.
