Copyright & Fair Use

Copyrighted material has limits to how we are allowed to use it. Movies, music, books, workbooks, plays, and other works of art and literature are examples of copyrighted material. Copyright laws protect the creators of these materials. We have a responsibility to learn, understand, and follow copyright laws.

So what is fair use anyway? Many educators often make the assumption that anything we use in our instruction is covered under fair use. After all, we are using it to educate our young people. Fair use can be tricky. Here are some tools to help you:

The Fair Use Evaluator is a tool that can help you decide if you are fairly using a copyrighted material.

There are 4 Fair use Factors that have to be considered:

What is your purpose for using this material?

What is the nature of the copyrighted work?

What amount of the material are you using?

What effect would your use have on the copyrighted work's value?

Creative Commons licenses allow people to share creative work freely and legally to use, share, repurpose, and remix. Try searching "the Commons" for your next lesson or presentation where images are needed.
