Opportunity for Input: School Calendar
MCPS provides a school year calendar that allows for effective use of time for teaching and learning, professional growth opportunities, and planning instructional strategies focused on improving student achievement while maintaining an equity lens for all students, and commitment to community engagement in the MCPS Antiracist System Action Plan. We will consider educational interests, operational needs, mandated school closures by state law, compliance with minimum instructional days and credit hour requirements, contingencies for inclement weather and other emergencies, staff professional days and early release days, and alignment with assessment schedules.
Action Required: Share the Feedback and Stakeholder Survey below with staff and families through October 1, 2023, via Connect-Ed, school website, Remind 101 App, Back-to-School Night event, and/or other opportunities in which you engage the community. The 2024–2025 MCPS School Calendar Stakeholder Survey is also available via QR code in handouts and in multiple languages. MCPS is seeking input about the 2024–2025 school year calendar! Please take a moment to complete the MCPS School Calendar 2024-2025 Feedback. Your input will be used to select the first and last day of school, as well as other important dates for the coming school year.
The Think Big Program: Calling all 10th graders! In the MYP Think Big Program, 10th grade students participate in a series of field trips using art-based experiences to help develop the skills needed for success on the MYP Personal Project, a culmination of the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). During these experiences, professional artists share, provide feedback, and perform for students to help inspire them during each step of the MYP Personal Project.
If you or your student is a rising 10th grader and interested in participating next year,
please complete THIS interest form (https://bit.ly/ThinkBigProgram)!
What is the cost for the program? The program is FREE. There is no cost for any of the field trips or experiences.
Do students need to be involved or interested in the arts to participate? Although the program centers around art-based experiences, students do not need to be involved in the arts to participate. Although the goal is to use artists’ experiences and performances to support their progress, students are encouraged to choose an MYP PP topic based on their own interests, passions, hobbies, or extracurriculars.
Is this program extra work? No! 10th graders are already completing the MYP Personal Project. This program just provides extra support and guidance throughout the project process.
Does this look good for college? Absolutely! In addition to being an amazing experience, the Think Big Program looks great on resumes and college applications. It also helps develop essential skills for IB courses in 11th and 12th grade, as well as college and career.
A diverse group of 39 IB Diploma and IB Career-related teachers came together last week during lunch to discuss ways to support one another and our students. Ms. Fass, an IB Math teacher, shared strategies to support students with their Internal Assessments (IAs.)
The IB Personal and Professional senior classes had an amazing SVHS Class of 2010 Alum - AJ Javaid visit. Mr. Javaid shared the incredible work he is doing at Johnson and Johnson with MONARCH. MONARCH is the first flexible robotic platform cleared for use in bronchoscopy and urology procedures. It aims to create new treatment paradigms to help improve patient's lives.
Mr. Javaid also shared life lessons from college admissions to negotiating salary and finding work-life balance to help guide our Seniors into the next phase of their lives.
In an effort to build community and address the whole student, teachers have students working collaboratively. Seniors worked together to find commonalities to earn an index card that could be used to help them build the tallest tower in their class.
In an effort to build community and address the whole student, seniors worked together to find commonalities and earn index card in a tower building contest. Afterwards, students reflected on their collaborative style and on the power of working together.
Mrs. Reyes’ IB Spanish 6/7 read and analyzed the Book, El Hidalgo de la Mancha. They then wrote their own creative plays based on the book using authentic language from the era. Using their imaginations, just like the main character, Don Quijote, students were able to improvise and put on a lively performance.
