Innovative Minds 1 Course Video
Innovative Minds I is designed to provide students with a hands on, collaborative approach to learning and problem solving using technology. Students engage in activities that not only build knowledge and skills in areas including computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, but also empower students to develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance. Lights, Camera, Literacy Course Video
This course increases literacy in both written and visual text, improves collaboration skills, builds confidence and motivation, and provides opportunities for high-level thinking via specific strategies. Students transfer their skills as viewers of film to skills on the written page, as well as learn how to read visual text and create effective visual communications. The course focuses on all three areas of the MCPS Moving Image Education—integrating, deconstructing, and creating the moving image. Students transfer reading skills such as inference from screen to script page to book. They use critical-thinking skills and explore new vocabulary in the areas of lexicography, chess, and film. Students deconstruct information at the literary, dramatic, and cinematic levels. Throughout the course, students reflect on their learning through student-to-student discourse and journal writing. They work collaboratively to apply the various skills and use technology to produce an authentic product—a short film. Digital Media
Programming Fundamentals Course Video
Students will have the opportunity to learning the fundamental aspects of coding, learning syntax, commands, and logic by using coding software. In this class students will not only develop basic programming skills but also incorporate their learning towards the development of games. Students will also examine how coding works with robots, being able to program actions and routines to complete various functions and operations. This is a great course for students who want to learn how to code and also with basic programming experience. Computer Science
Cybersecurity I Course Video
Students will learn about computers and other digital systems and devices, how information travels across the Internet and networks and how to protect electronic information. Innovative Art & Design 1 Course Video
Introductory middle school art course for students who want to explore their creative side using a variety of art materials, develop art techniques, and use creative thinking skills to express ideas and viewpoints about personal experiences and the world. Students will produce meaningful and unique drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, crafts and digital art in a studio setting. Students will also develop skills using digital tools to create artworks illustrating their viewpoints about personal experiences via digital media and/or digital photography. Digital Art
This course is for students with no prior instrumental music experience. Basic instrumental skills are developed by performing a variety of music. Students are taught the elements of musical form, terms and symbols, tone production, instrument care and maintenance, and the importance of consistent practice habits. The development of technical skills necessary to perform Grade 1 to Grade 2 Level music is stressed, performance levels established by the National Association for Music Education. Emphasis is placed on developing formal rehearsal decorum, following a conductor, and developing pitch and rhythmic security in preparation for performing an independent part in the traditional band or orchestra ensemble. Students also learn melodic form and construction as they examine and perform more complex folk melodies and melodies from master composers.
