Grade(s): 11,12 Credit: 0.5 or 1.0 Elective Credit Semester or Year Course

Students with Junior or Senior status can apply to serve as tutors for any academic area. Students can only tutor one class per semester, and they must have taken the course in order to tutor. Academic tutors will serve as role models, coaches, and academic resources for peers. Potential candidates must have excellent attendance and a strong academic background (B or better) in the subject area they will be tutoring, and must have taken the class. Tutors must be willing and committed to helping ALL students reach their academic goals. Applicants must submit an application that includes a writing prompt and teacher recommendation. Once selected, candidates must complete online training. Tutors will be assessed on the quality and quantity of support provided to all students. 

NOTE: Students are expected to request a full schedule of courses (NOT including Academic Tutor). Once accepted, selected students will have their schedules adjusted to include the Academic Tutor class if possible. Academic tutor applications are located online on the MHS website. The teacher recommendation must come from a teacher of the course you wish to tutor.

Independent Study is a semester or year of credit developed to provide an opportunity for significant growth, experience, and enrichment in a curriculum area, which goes beyond the present course offerings. Such credit will be achieved through a curriculum jointly planned by the student and teacher to include a final project, performance, or report that may be reviewed by the independent study review board. This study must be contracted between a student advanced in a given area and a teacher and may replace a regularly scheduled class. Students must work with the teacher to develop a plan for the semester, and submit it to the administrative office within the first two weeks of the semester.

NOTE: Students are expected to request a full schedule of courses (NOT including Independent Study). Once accepted, selected students will have their schedules adjusted to include the Independent Study class if possible. A student must make written application for Independent Study (by May 15 for Semester 1, and December 14 for Semester 2). Applications are available in the Student Services Office along with specific guidelines detailing this program. An Independent Study course may be designed for any curricular area.

Student Link Crew Leaders are an invaluable resource to the Advisory program. Link Crew Leaders are extensively trained through a structured curriculum that focuses on team and relationship building. Leaders are equipped with necessary skills to serve as positive role models, motivators and mentors to successfully guide students through the transition from middle school to high school. Link Crew Leaders are selected through a rigorous application process that includes a written application, interview, and mandatory training sessions. Leaders will be expected to attend several special events, such as Freshman Orientation and Future Freshman Night. Students will have the opportunity to apply for Link Crew Leader in the spring of each year.

Students in Intro to Teaching and Education will explore topics in education as well as complete 50 hours of classroom observations in elementary schools throughout the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District. This course is designed to introduce students to education and teaching through a combination of practical experience in school settings, group discussions, and individual reflection. Students will explore the various relationships among education, curriculum, and instruction across contexts of home, community, and school. Our focus will be observing and documenting school practices and connecting this experience to studies of philosophical perspectives of education and current ideas and questions in education. This course is a dual credit enrollment between Middleton High School students and Madison College.

Credit: 1.0 Elective Year Course

Students in this class will explore how the most effective teachers strive to understand the cultural backgrounds of their students and utilize that cultural knowledge to anchor learning. They also constantly educate themselves on how the historical legacies of privilege, oppression, and opportunity still exist in their own schools, classrooms, and practices and actively work to dismantle it. They are constantly looking for ways to learn more about people from different backgrounds in order to challenge their own misconceptions and to celebrate the assets of all of their students. This course will help you understand how we arrived at the US school system we currently have, what its limitations are, and what you can do to improve it so that you can be the best possible teacher for all your future students. This course is a dual credit enrollment between Middleton High School students and Madison College.

The purpose of Advisory is to foster intellectual growth and habits of commitment by developing closer relationships between staff and students, establish workable goals for high school and post-high school experiences, develop student self-advocacy skills, facilitate communication (student-teacher-parent), provide an adult contact, and most importantly, personalize each student’s experience at Middleton High School. The Ninth Grade Advisory is aligned with the national Link Crew program which provides a structure to guide freshmen toward both academic and social success.
