Counselor Advisory Council Members
Our Counselor Advisory Council is a mixture of our Instructional Leadership Team, PTO, Kindness Crew, and Community Partners. We meet monthly to discuss different needs throughout our school and ways we can support.

Program Implementation Cycle
As our 2023-2024 school year began, McNeil's Counselor Advisory Council began reflecting and discussing the need for a more in depth look at our Postsecondary Planning and Career Readiness goals. One way we researched this need was using our McNeil Campus Improvement Plan which provided a goal to use data-driven decisions to engage students in learning experiences that ensure growth and will prepare them for graduation and postsecondary success.

As a collective team, including administrators, parents, staff, and students we saw a need to help our students start looking toward their future goals. With that challenge we started discussing the need of implementing a school wide career day.

As part of the CAC, the School Counselor, Communities in School Liaison, Parent and Teacher Organization President, and Principal, met in February to discuss the Career Day goals, logistics, community members to invite, SWAG, and much more to make our first annual career day a success. We discussed the goals we had for the final outcome and how we would maintain order, flexibility, and encourage our students to listen and take at least one new nugget of inspiration, idea, or a future goal for them to research.
Designing
Designing
During the design process, we spent a lot of time being specific about how we wanted the day to run, what we wanted the community presenters to share, and how we wanted the students to reflect on the day. We purposely designed two different time periods with a chance for our presenters to be treated to a short break where they were able to enjoy a special thank you from us. We also created a reflection activity for all students to complete once they were finished with their time during career day. We also designed reflection surveys for our presenters and teachers to fill out once the day was complete.

The actual day of the event could not have been any sweeter. The students had amazing smiles, the presenters were very engaging, and we all enjoyed watching the students learn about many different community careers including: HEB, McKinney Library, Floral Design, Yoga, STEAM, Chick Fil A, Video Producing, Family Doctor, Chef, Insurance, Military, Photography, Construction, and our very own High School Career and Technical Education department. The passion our presenters showed for their collective career was invigorating and inspiring. We even had our media department come out and do an article about our career day. Link to Article

Evaluating
At the end of our amazing Career Day, the school counselor sent out two different surveys. One to the McNeil teachers and another one to our career day presenters. They provided a lot of ideas to encourage us on future Career Days and also gave us constructive feedback on ways we can improve the day. Overall the students, staff, and presenters loved the day and they also appreciated our thank you gift. When we looked back at our main goal, which was to introduce our students to different careers they can pursue with or without a college degree we surpassed our expectations.
