Once students demonstrate a growing awareness of words in sentences, then shift to clapping to match syllables.

Syllable popping
Syllable popping
Give students "bubbles" to pop as you slowly say a word in its syllable chunks. They will "pop" a bubble for each syllable in the word. You can use 2D bubbles or make it fun with some bubble wrap, pop-its, or real bubbles!
For some students, you have to move onto more complex phonological awareness tasks that offer more diverse means of demonstrating awareness.
