Phonological Awareness
for students with limited verbal abilities
for students with limited verbal abilities
When teaching phonological awareness, it is important to work along a continuum of skills and help students to develop an awareness of words in a sentence, syllables in words, onset-rime, and phonemes. Remember that the goal is not mastery of a specific set of items in a prescribed order. After students have developed an awareness of an earlier skill, shift the focus to another skill along the continuum.
Click each button below to learn more about phonological skills along the continuum and how to reinforce these skills with your students.
As you navigate through each section, take note of which activities you will put into practice in an upcoming lesson plan with your students.
Be ready to respond in the reflection - which new activity will you try?
*Note: This is not an exhaustive list of phonological skills and there are many published continuums. This continuum and the skills that are highlighted within were chosen based on their accessibility to non-speaking students.
